Breanna Andrews Period 6 Country Study Country: Egypt

People The majority of the people that live in Egypt are Egyptian, there are very few immigrants. Egyptians are expected to live about 73 years Many Egyptians speak Arabic and 90% of them are Muslim

Government Egypt has a republic government, with three branches that are run just like they are in the United States. There is the executive branch, which consists of the president, who is elected by popular vote among the people for a six-year term. The vice-president, and the cabinet. The current president and vice-president of Egypt are, Hosni Mubarak and Omar Suleiman. There is a legislative branch, which is the bicameral system that consists of the Advisory Council or Majlis al-Shura (Shura Council) that usually functions in a consultative role there are a total of 264 seats, 176 of which are elected by popular vote, and 88 percent of them are appointed by the president; members each serve six-year terms. The peoples assembly of Majlis al-Sha'b has a total of 518 seats 508 of which are elected by popular vote 64 are reserved for women, and the remaining 10 are appointed by the president, each member serves a 5 years term. Finally, there is the Judicial branch, which is the supreme constitutional court.

Economy Egypt has a GPD of $6,200 and a public debt that is 80.5% of there GPD, they have a budget of $46.82 billion in revenues, and $64.19 billion in expenditures. There major imports are machinery and equipment, chemicals and wood. There major exports are there industries which are, oil/petro, cotton, textiles, metal products, and chemicals. Egypt's major agriculture products are cotton, rice, corn, wheat, beans, fruit, vegetables, and cattle.

Major problems Egypt's biggest problem are there high rates of poverty, and use of illegal drugs. Egypt's poverty rates have hit a high leaving 20% of there population under the poverty line. The price of food are rising in Egypt- leading to poverty and causing people to spend less on the economy and other products. Protesters are trying to remove the president of Egypt because they want to see change and think that he is becoming a dictator. Unemployment is another problem as it increased to 2 million by 1986 due to lack of education and over population.

Political factions The NDP (National Democratic Party) has been the real dominating power over all the others. There is also the national progressive unionist grouping, the tomorrow party, young Egypt party, and the social liberal party.
