Nuts and Bolts of Creating Faculty Led Short Term Trips August 28th Presenters: Steve Whitman- PSU Faculty Scott Tayloe- CISabroad Lisa Ladd- Global Education Office Jessica Pine-Global Education Office

Session Outline: Introductions Key Considerations Trip models (Faculty run and Provider supported) Creating Cross-Cultural Awareness Process for submitting proposals Questions

Key Considerations: Location- (one or several?) Safety concerns- State Department Warning? Non-credit or credit bearing? Existing course or new? (Global Programs Course Proposal, Experimental Course Proposal) Open to grad students? Community members? Other USNH schools? Excursions or visits to include?

More Key Considerations… Price- How much do students want to spend? Will faculty pay their way or will students absorb the cost? Timing of trip- During break? Semester course with trip component Risk and responsibility Provider or not?...

Faculty run vs. Provider supported

Experience from Steve…. Sweden Iceland Scotland Australia India Costa Rica

Provider Supportive Why we love faculty-led programs. Increasing trend in International Education. Strong interest from our university partners. Knowledge of working with faculty and various institutions: Employees with previous experience working on campuses.

Provider Supportive Takes the pressure of the institution. Liability Insurance Risk Management/Assessment Takes the pressure off the faculty Manages all reservations, payments. Crisis Management: Both Travel and Student Related

Provider Supportive Tour BasedCIS (Education Based) Menu of Itineraries.Designed around the course. Contract-driven.Location-driven. Last minute changes.Year in advance planning. Student friendly.Faculty friendly. Little or no support.High level of support. Itineraries can change.Sustainable Lack of cultural immersion.Culture-conscious.

Provider Supportive In addition to the program logistics, we: Create pre-departure materials. Assist with pre-departure orientations. Create cultural activities for your programs, if requested. Create program photo books for participants.

Cross Cultural Awareness The CIS La Vida Local model consists of a series of activities and workshops that can be replicated in all programs sites. Students participate in social and educational activities and encounter local culture in authentic ways. These experiences, combined with reflection and group synthesis, create a deeper understanding of local life.

Cross Cultural Awareness  Top concerns in education abroad (The Forum State of the Field Survey 2011)  Cultural integration of students  Helping students maximize their experience  Adequate preparation of students  Students need ways to engage each other, their surroundings and the local community in a structured way.  Participating in this program will lead to greater cultural understanding on local, global, and personal levels.

Cross Cultural Awareness To challenge students to understand more of what they are seeing, feeling and perceiving To increase student’s experience of culture, including cultural difference To increase cultural awareness, sensitivity, and understanding To tie student’s experience abroad to learning about themselves and their communities

Cross Cultural Awareness Sample Activities: Subjective Adjectives. Local News Photo-Journalism Scavenger Hunts Letter to Self/Virtual Suitcase Cultural Credit Card

Process for submitting proposal: 1.For existing course, complete Global Programs Course Proposal. Submit to Deb Regan at GEO. For new course, you must also complete Experimental Course Form and get approval from Provost’s office 2.Meet with GEO 3.Arrange for detailed contract and budget and refer to checklist
