Professional Practice III Lab All Labs on Tuesday mornings (9 – 12 p.m.) – 5 labs, alternating weeks + lab exam Group A (start Jan. 8) – Lab exam April 1 Group B (start Jan. 15) – Lab exam April 8 No lab Reading week & Pain week Each 3 hours-1.5 h – Dispensing Section h – Pharmaceutical Care Skills

Course Objectives (see syllabus for more details) Apply knowledge from therapeutics, pharmacology, self-med, jurisprudence, and other courses taken Apply principles of communication to role- play situations Use a structured approach to identify patient’s needs with respect to PC model in role playing situation and written case scenarios

Dispensing Section 1 verbal RX 2 written RX with lab values Pharmacist note – see handout Sign up sheets with lab practice times are posted across the hall from PPL 750

Pharmaceutical Care Skills Patient interviewing and recommendations Small groups – each student will role-play with TA – each interaction last 10 minutes and then feedback Address the DRPs and counsel on meds Topics for each lab in syllabus – from Therapeutics/Pharmacology/ Self-Med Device demonstration – will provide opportunity for students to go in lab to practice Insulin Pen training in January – sign up sheets will be posted

PC Skills Labs Lab 1 – Gathering Info Minimum standard – current medical problems, current medications, allergies & ADR (nature of allergy or reaction) Lab 2 – Identifying Option and Management Strategies – Device Demo Lab 3 – Identifying Option and Management Strategies Lab 4 & 5– Follow-up and Putting it all together

Assessment Each component will have Honours/Pass /Fail (written, verbal, PC) PC component will have verbal feedback & written assessment from TA Example assessment forms at end of syllabus Missed lab policy – see syllabus

Remedial Work See syllabus – p. 16 Return of Assessment forms – Thursday 12:30- B2 If you receive “Fail” in any component of the lab – follow up is required Failure to submit remedial work on time will result in automatic “Fail” for your next lab Verbal prescription tutorial – Monday at 12 p.m. in the lab – for labs 1 & 2 Written prescription remedial – submit Monday 1pm PC Skills Tutorial – done in groups within 1 week after the lab (group times will be posted)
