Designing Technology-Integrated Instruction CETL Pedagogy Seminar-Instructional Technology April 16 th Bruce Naples, Director - Academic Computing Center

Background Learning Management Systems (LMS) LMSs Provide a framework for : a. Web Enhanced Courses – traditional face-to-face courses with online components b. Partly Online Courses (PNET-Hybrid-Blended) 30%-80% online c. Fully Online Courses (FNET-Asynchronous) 80%-100% online

Supported Learning Management Systems (LMS) at Queensborough Blackboard –hosted by CUNY, currently at Bb, Inc. in Virginia Pros Mature, robust – many features including Web 2.0 All Courses and Students automatically populated each semester Cons Version 8, which we are using, is NOT well supported by Bb, Inc. Sometimes viewed as unstable, but most outages are related to CUNY’s Login system (LDAP) and overloads of CUNY’s Network Epsilen – hosted by the NY Times in Manhattan Pros Includes four components: ePortfolio; Groups; Courses; Assessment Matrix Includes Web 2.0 tools and Social Networking capability Seems stable, but does not have the user load that Bb has Cons Courses, Groups, and Students membership must be established by each faculty member Feature for feature it is not as robust as Bb, but it is getting better with time
