Objectives Objective 1: Identify the two types of vitamins and their benefits Objective 2: Identify and explain the benefits of minerals. Objective 3: Identify the benefits of water

Vitamins Vitamins: Are compounds that help regulate many vital body processes including; Digestion, absorption, and metabolism of other nutrients. 2 types: Water or Fat soluble (see pg. 263) Water- Dissolve in water, and pass easily into the blood during digestion. Ex: Vitamins C, B1, B2, Niacin, B6, B12, Folic Acid Fat- Absorbed, stored and transported in fat. Excess buildup of these vitamins can be toxic Ex: Vitamins A, D, E, and K

Minerals * Minerals: ARE elements found in food that are used by the body. * Because the body cannot produce minerals, it must get them from food. * Calcium: promotes strong bones & teeth -> what mammal needs to drink milk from a cow in order to get its calcium? Osteoporosis: a condition in which the bones become fragile and break easily  see page 264 for some examples

Water Water is essential for most body functions including; Moving food through the digestive system Digesting carbs and protein Transporting nutrients & removing waste Storing & releasing heat Cooling the body through perspiration Cushioning the eyes, brain, & spinal cord Lubricating the joints.

Water continued Girls need 9 cups of water a day Boys need 13 cups of water a day If you are active, you will need more water due to perspiration If you feel thirsty, you waited too long to take in fluids. Limit your coffee, tea, and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Caffeine eliminates water from your body and may cause dehydration.
