Ionic Compounds Cation Anion Metals Polyatomic Ions Non- Metals
Main Group Metals Any metal that is not a transition metal
Is Silver (Ag) a main group metal? Check Point
Is Magnesium (Mg) a main group metal? Check Point
Step 1 How to Name Ionic Compounds?? [ with main group metals] Write the elemental name of the cation. Example: Na +1 → Sodium Compound: NaCl
How to Name Ionic Compounds?? [ with main group metals] Step 2 Write the elemental name of the anion. Example: Cl -1 → Chlorine Compound: NaCl
Step 3 How to Name Ionic Compounds?? [ with main group metals] Change the suffix of the anion to “ide” IF the anion is a nonmetal Example: Chlorine Chloride Compound: NaCl
Step 4 How to Name Ionic Compounds?? [ with main group metals] Rewrite the name of the compound Example: Sodium Chloride Compound: NaCl
Exception What if your anion is a polyatomic ion? Write the name as it is on your list of polyatomic ions. Example: NO 3 -1 → Nitrate
Example: K 2 SO 4 Cation → K +, Anion → SO Write the elemental name of the cation: 2. Write the name of the polyatomic ion: K +1 → Potassium SO 4 -2 → Sulfate Answer: Potassium Sulfate
Guided Practice Teacher: 1. Will show the problem on the board Students: 1. Take 22 seconds to look at the chemical formula SILENTLY and compose your answer on the whiteboard. 2. Take 38 seconds to speak with your shoulder partner to solve the problem and discuss how to do it 3. When Mr. Ghosh says “Boards Up” all students should raise their whiteboards in the air
CaBr 2 Calcium Bromide #1
KClO 3 Potassium Chlorate #2
Al 2 O 3 Aluminum Oxide #3
Be(CN) 2 Beryllium Cyanide #4

Closing What type of compounds did we learn to name today?
Warm Up: 4 Minutes Write the Learning Target You should be working SILENTLY Stay in your own seat How do you distinguish between a main group metal and a transition metal? What is one difference between a main group metal and a transition metal?
Agenda Warm Up – 7 minutes Cornell Style Notes/ Examples – 15 minutes Guided Practice – 6 minutes Compound Bingo -24 minutes Closing – 1 minute
“But Mr. Ghosh, HOW DO YOU KNOW THE CHARGES OF THOSE ELEMENTS IN THE MIDDLE” – ANONYMOUS STUDENT
How to Name Ionic Compounds? [with transition metal] Step 1 Determine if the cation is a main group metal or transition metal Example FeO Transition Metal
How to Name Ionic Compounds? [with transition metal] Step 2 Write the name of the cation FIRST Iron LEAVE AN OPEN PARENTHESIS NEXT TO THE NAME OF METAL Example FeO Example: Iron( )
What Goes in the Parenthesis? Oxidation number of Iron How do we know the oxidation number of Iron ? Charges of Cation + Anion = 0 Fe O
How to Name Ionic Compounds? [with transition metal] Step 3 Place the charge of the transition metal in the parenthesis using roman numerals Example FeO Example: Iron(II )
How to Name Ionic Compounds? [with transition metal] Step 4 Write the name of the anion CORRECTLY [Nonmetal → Change the suffix to –ide] [Polyatomic Ion- Name as is] Example FeO Example: Oxide
How to Name Ionic Compounds? [with transition metal ] Step 5 Write the complete name. Example FeO Example: Iron (II)Oxide
Example 1: Cu 2 S 3
Example 2: Ni(CO 3 ) 2
