What is government? Definition: A system by which a community, state or nation is governed – Governed means : controlled; organized Why do we need government? – Keep order

Monarchy Vocabulary MONARCHY: a government run by a king or queen; citizens have fewer rights INHERITED POWER: power is gained by birth rights (being born into the royal family)

Dictatorship vocabulary DICTATORSHIP: a harsh government run by a dictator; the citizens have few rights SEIZED POWER: taking control by force

Senators, congress representatives Government is broken into specialized branches:branches – Each branch is in charge of one job/function of the government Legislative: makes laws Judicial : interprets the Constitution to make sure its being followed Executive: approves laws, military and foreign policy – This is so one branch is not more powerful than the other The USA and India are some of the largest democracies in the world
