Dictatorship vocabulary DICTATORSHIP: a harsh government run by a dictator; the citizens have few rights SEIZED POWER: taking control by force
Dictatorship Leader is the dictator ( does not refer to themselves as a dictator) Gain power by force Power is not shared Citizens have little to no rights – Ex. No freedom of speech, no religion allowed Citizens have very low civic participation ( not allowed to participate People live in fear – Leader must maintain power through fear Known for very strict rules and punishments Examples are : North KoreaNorth Korea

Democracy Citizens have high rights and participate in government – People have the power Rights are protected by the Constitution Constitution A leader is elected by votes from the citizens – Leaders mostly called presidents Citizens also elect other citizens to represent them in government – Ex. Senators, congress representatives Government is broken into specialized branches:branches – Each branch is in charge of one job/function of the government Legislative: makes laws Judicial : interprets the Constitution to make sure its being followed Executive: approves laws, military and foreign policy – This is so one branch is not more powerful than the other The USA and India are some of the largest democracies in the world
