The Nervous System

Did you know? Menigitis- inflammation of the meniges caused by bacteria, viral or fungal infections. Subdural Hematoma- large blood clot found in under the dura mater. Usually sign of trauma.

Disorders of the Brain Stroke Usually because of a clot there is a cessation of blood to the brain and the region is starved of oxygen. Hemiplegia- paralysis on one side of the body. Huntington disease Involuntary movements, dementia and death Creutzfeldt-Jakob Human mad cow disease. A prion causes protein denaturization in the brain. Seizures sudden burst of neuron activity. Epilepsy is chronic seizure, normally idiopathic.

Brain Dysfunctions 1.Slight and transient brain injury 2.Traumatic injury that destroys brain tissue 3.Total nonresponsiveness to stimulation 4.May cause medulla oblongata to be wedged into foramen magnum by pressure of blood C. Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) F. Contusion D. Coma E. Concussion

5. After head injury, retention of water by brain 6. Result when a brain region is deprived of blood or exposed to prolonged ishemia 7. Progressive degeneration of the brain with abnormal protein deposits 8. Autoimmune disorder with extensive demyelination 9. A ministroke; fleeting symptoms of a CVA B. Cerebral edema G. Intercranial hemorrhage A. Alzheimer’s disease H. Multiple sclerosis I. Transient ischemic attack (TIA)

Spinal Cord Injuries

Disorders of PNS Shingles(herpes zoster) is a viral infection usually caused by the varicella virus (chicken pox) It usually affects a specific region of skin innervated by a given spinal nerve It usually affects a specific region of skin innervated by a given spinal nerve

Disorders of PNS Sciatica Causes severe pain in the leg caused by compression, irritation, or inflammation of the sciatic nerves, which are thick nerves extending down the back of each leg.
