UNICEF strives to change the lives of children in the greatest need.

UNICEF was founded to help children after World War II.

Anthony Lake is currently UNICEF’s Executive Director. © UNICEF/NYHQ /Markisz

UNICEF has 5 main focus areas which aim to globally help disadvantaged children. Children survival and development Basic education and HIV/AIDS and children Child protection Policy advocacy and partnerships gender equality

Focus Area 1: Children survival and development

Focus Area 2: Child Protection Political Economic Civil Cultural/Social

Focus Area 3: Basic education and general equality

Focus Area 4: HIV/AIDS and children UNICEF works to “Prevent, Provide, and Protect” against HIV/AIDS.

Focus Area 5: Policy advocacy and partnerships

UNICEF is actively providing assistance to children in 190+ countries throughout the world.

In 2010, UNICEF supplies were used mostly in Africa and in Southwest Asia. Where does the Haiti stand?

In 2010, India, Switzerland, and Belgium were the top UNICEF suppliers. Where does the United States stand?

Most of the funds received by UNICEF come from governments.

In 2010, the United States donated the most money to UNICEF’s efforts.

The Child Survival and Development program receives the most funds.

This is where UNICEF spent the majority of their income during $757 million for Vaccines $203 million for Pharmaceuticals $104 million for International freight $102 million for Medical supplies/equipment $138 million for Construction $117 million for Nutrition

UNICEF is criticized for opposing international adoption. Bartholet, Elizabeth. International Adoption: Thoughts on the Human Rights Issues. 13 Buff. Hum. Rts. L. Rev. 151 (2007).

This creates tension between UNICEF and adoptive parents.

There are ways that YOU can support UNICEF on our campus and in Chapel Hill.
