Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 17 of 33 “Yes” answers indicate positive qualities that patients should look for in a doctor. Does the doctor give each patient the time and attention he or she needs? Does the doctor make patients feel comfortable discussing personal information? Does the doctor explain each patient’s condition in terms that are easy to understand? Is the doctor knowledgeable about patients’ conditions and medical options? Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 19 of 33 Healthcare facilities include doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, and long-term care centers. Healthcare Facilities These facilities offer different levels of care.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 20 of 33 Perhaps the most frequently used healthcare facility is the doctor’s private office. Doctors’ Offices Here doctors, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants do routine examinations and tests to diagnose and treat minor illnesses and injuries. Routine healthcare provided in a doctor’s office is called primary healthcare.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 21 of 33 A clinic is a facility in which primary healthcare is provided by one or more doctors and other healthcare providers. Clinics An outpatient is a person admitted to a clinic for tests or treatments that do not require an overnight stay. A variety of tests and surgical procedures can be performed at clinics.

Hospitals Most hospitals also have emergency departments to treat sudden conditions or injuries. Healthcare that is given to a patient in a hospital is known as secondary healthcare. A patient who is required to stay in a hospital overnight or longer is called an inpatient. Care provided in specialty hospitals and teaching hospitals is called tertiary healthcare.

The Internet and You should never rely on information you find on the Internet without first discussing it with your doctor. Some doctors now use to communicate with their patients about non-emergency health issues.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 28 of 33 Many imaging techniques, including MRIs, CT scans, and X-rays, are performed with computerized equipment. Computerized Imaging Digital images allow doctors to share a patient’s results more easily with other specialists.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 29 of 33 In a growing number of hospitals, doctors may make “virtual visits” to their patients. Robot Doctors A robot allows the doctor and patient to see each other and communicate even though they are in separate locations. “Robot doctors” may prove to be especially useful for hospitals in which medical specialists are not always on site, or when one doctor rotates around to several hospitals in one region.

Section 24.1 The Healthcare System Slide 30 of 33 Patients benefit when their body scans, test results, or medical records can be shared efficiently between providers. Electronic Health Records This type of file sharing, however, is not available everywhere.
