Aligning School Communities

Leaders of Learning “Leaders who develop a common language do not settle for a superficial use of key terms. Instead, they drill deeper to ensure there is understanding behind each term.” What is the PURPOSE of our Programs?

Common Language Goals and Purpose We all set Goals…

Definition of Goal The result or achievement toward which effort is directed or aimed, a destination.

GOAL Dribbling Left Handed New Dismount from the Beam Winning a Section/State Championship

Goal is to Win

But that’s not our Purpose… Definition of Purpose * The reason for which something exists or is done.

PURPOSE Dribbling Left Handed = New Dismount off of the Beam = Winning a Championship = Overcoming Adversity Moving Outside of Comfort Zone Working Together with Others

We Prepare, Plan & Play to ‘win’ But the ‘win’ is not our PURPOSE *Education is our PURPOSE *Growth is our PURPOSE Purpose

Coaches Purpose Statements I value my success as a coach as to what our student athletes are doing years after they graduate. I want to add value to each individual and teach them life lessons that will help them in all aspects of their lives. It is my purpose to passionately help young men develop into adult citizens who will display integrity and loyalty to self, family and community.

Student Purpose Statements Amelia Johnson- Senior Volleyball Hunter Trautman- Football, Basketball, Baseball Isaiah Brunette- Football Show Choir Posters throughout our schools

I play and lead to conquer obstacles and be an inspiration to my teammates by showing that passion and positivity lead to togetherness and life-long friendships. Amelia Johnson Senior-Volleyball I play for my teammates, strive for excellence, and show accountability to all while we play the games that we love in the pursuit of winning. Hunter Trautman Senior-Football, Basketball, Baseball I strive for excellence at all times while holding myself and teammates accountable. I participate to inspire others to have integrity and build character; for it is what we do when nobody is watching that truly matters. Isaiah Brunette Senior-Football and Show Choir

How do I/We define success in our programs?

How will we collectively and publicly define success as the leaders in our school district?

My Thoughts The Goal for our program is to win games, competitions, conference and state championships. But that isn’t our SF Activities Purpose Our Purpose is to develop in the students skills that will help them be successful in life in the present and in the future This takes intention and focus

My Thoughts Coaching Evaluation (4 questions) Why do I coach? Why do I coach the way I do? What does it feel like to be coached by me? How do I define and measure success?

My Thoughts And it takes clear expectations and support for coaches. We don’t get to determine who participates in our programs. We will try to help students become better athletes/participants and through the Why We Play process and if we are intentional we will grow better equipped human beings.

WHY WE WHY WE PLAY was created by the Minnesota State High School League. For more information and for ongoing support, join the conversation on Twitter.
