Leading the way in School Based New Apprenticeships

vetEAST is a consortium consisting of seven government secondary schools: Croydon Community School Forest Hill College Heathmont College Monbulk College Pembroke Secondary College Rowville Secondary College Upwey High School

To collaboratively provide individual pathways for students into industry based training and employment, whilst retaining ongoing support & recognition from their schools.

All seven schools work together to offer students part time new apprenticeships in conjunction with their Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) studies. vetEAST SCHOOL BASED NEW APPRENTICESHIPS

PROGRAM STRUCTURE SCHOOL: two days per week TAFE: one day per week EMPLOYMENT: two days per week The vetEAST program is the only one of its kind in the state where schools employ a co-ordinator to facilitate training (sign training plan) and employment as well as monitor students progress at both locations.

EMPLOYMENT BRIDGE All New Apprentices attend a compulsory induction program which includes basic OHS and work related skills training. Employee responsibilities are also addressed. Students must also have completed at least one week of work experience in their chosen field. Many of the students undertake a work placement program in Year 10 – which assist their work readiness skills.

NEW APPRENTICE BENEFITS Strong personal & professional support in all 3 components of the program Ability to complete VCAL studies while undertaking their new apprenticeship Better prepared for full time employment and apprenticeships when leaving school Employment whilst being trained Enhanced job security and career prospects.

EMPLOYER BENEFITS of SBNA Professional selection of motivated people Enrolment at TAFE & liaise with the training provider Regular monitoring and review of New Apprentice’s progress at work & TAFE The New Apprentice is only employed by the organisation while he or she remains suitable and productive. If there is a problem we resolve it together. Employment can also be provided through a group training company.

COLLABORATION & PARTNERSHIPS Partnerships: NAC – assist in the signing of training plans RTOs – organise training and regular visits Parents – regular communication and semester reports Employers – regular visits to the workplace.

OUTCOMES FOR NEW APPRENTICES Over 90% of the students who have participated in the program have gained successful outcomes, either during or at the completion of their New Apprenticeships, most leading to full time employment or apprenticeship. New apprentices are supported if they need to change industries during the program.

SUPPORT SERVICES Professional learning workshops on various aspects of VCAL Personal development workshops for students Monthly meetings of VCAL Co- ordinators to share ideas and resources New apprentices pay a fee to vetEAST which provides funding for personal development, individual support and co-ordination.
