COACH LEARNING EXPERIENCE # 6 Problems as Opportunities “ Pink Bat” Objectives: #1-Participants will be introduced to perceptual /inattentional blindness (Daniel Simons) #2-Participants will be introduced to Pink Bat thinking (Michael McMillan) a way to counter perceptual/inattentional blindness 2

Coach Learning Experience # 6 “Pink Bat” Thinking Perceptual /Inattentional Blindness Professor Daniel Simons research on selective attention/inattentional blindness Inattentional blindness, also known as perceptual blindness, is when a person fails to notice some thing that is in plain sight. Selective attention or perceptual blindness describes our process of only focusing on a narrow view (spotlight vision) while disregarding other factors that play into the big picture( floodlight vision). 3

Perceptual Blindness in the DD Field Traditional Thinking People in the DD system exhibit target behaviors that need to be reduced or eliminated The role of traditional plans are to manage and control people through the manipulation of the antecedents & consequences For the best interest of the person the use of aversive or coercive acts are applied to help them improve Success for the person is identified as the reduction of the targeted maladaptive behaviors 4

Perceptual Blindness in the DD Field Traditional Thinking Increased positive interaction w/staff & peers at ALL times Becoming quiet & compliant w/no more than 1 verbal prompt Decreasing non-compliance with staff request Will lay on the floor with 1 verbal prompt Increased acceptance of verbal interventions from staff 100% reduction in target behavior of yelling, running away, hitting & swearing. 100% compliant with all staff request 6

Coach Learning Experience # 6 “Pink Bat” Thinking Overcoming Perceptual/Inattentional Blindness Intentional Thoughts - Actions- Beliefs are essential to move beyond pereceptual/inattentional blindness 9

Coach Learning Experience # 3 “Pink Bat” Thinking & Choices The “Beginners Mind” approach will align with Pink Bat Michael McMillan reminds us that “You can live each in a world filled with “problems” or rise each morning & embrace a world filled with unseen solutions…eager for you to find them. The decision is yours***both worlds exist. The one you choose is the one you create. Are you willing to choose & create a culture where Quality of Life for people we serve is the focus and the world we want to create. 10

Coach Learning Experience # 6 “Pink Bat” Thinking Challenging discussion on why “Pink Bat” thinking is important What is life like for a person with a “BEHAVIOR PLAN” ? What is the outcome for a person whose life is controlled, restricted & limited ? What is the ISP experience like for families and people served ? 11

Coach Learning Experience # 6 “Pink Bat” Thinking Assumptions (expert thinking) creates perceptual blindness Traditional behavior management and the deficit based model of planning are examples of pereceptual/inattentional blindness When people are afraid to share Pink Bat possibilities, everyone loses In “Pink Bat” thinking a problem is really a solution waiting to be discovered 12

Coach Learning Experience # 6 Pink Bat Thinking Beginners & outsiders are open to possibilities and don’t make assumptions Just focusing on problems blocks out solutions What you believe and focus on …becomes your reality When people are afraid to share Pink Bat possibilities, everyone loses 13

The “Pink Bat” Focal Point Focus on developing strong advocates including self- advocates & family advocates Having frequent possibility conversations Always focusing on success A never wavering disciplined focus on quality of life including conversations & actions focused on the person served Confronting our past & traditional approaches 14

“Pink Bat” in the DD Profession 15 Improved Quality of Life Opportunities for Personal Success Surrounded by Allies Focus on Possibilities Success Plan

Success Planning Success is influenced by focusing on what is possible Respectful supports focus on the physical, emotional and mental well being of the person The focal point of services in the DD profession is on Quality of Life. 16

Quality of Life AJIDD- May 2010 International research on Quality of Life in 15 countries in four geographic regions for 769 individuals exploring 8 core quality of life domains Ranking of Top Emotional well being 2- Interpersonal relationships 3-Material well being 4-Self-determination 5-Personal development 17

Beliefs of an OACB Quality of Life Coach 18 Compassionate care Concern for physical/mental/emotiona l well -being Being connected to others Caring supports Personal Success & Quality of Life

Coach Learning Experience # 6 Pink Bat Thinking & Choices Are you willing to choose & create a culture where Quality of Life for people we serve is the focus and the world we want to create. This means we will have to be intentional about becoming comfortable with Uncomfortable situations & discussions. One way to learn to become comfortable with the uncomfortable is learning to “Eat the Frog” 19

Change the Conversation to achieve Quality Care We alter our conversations and actions to focus on “Quality of Life by using “Pink Bat” thinking It is time to “Eat the Frog” 20
