The Goals H To generate more student awareness of the CDC’s services H To promote more exploration of career issues by students H To assist students in feeling more comfortable about utilizing the services of the CDC
Scheduling The Event - Best Time H When are the students on campus? H Time of Day (11-1) H Where do they hang-out? H Outside H Weather, Weather, Weather!
The Midway Games Wheel of Major or Spin for your Major Toss for Training Putt for Paycheck Raffle Game we have dropped - Who wants a Career?
Wheel of Major H This is a “Wheel of Fortune” type of game H Students spin the wheel H List of “majors” is on the wheel H The gamekeeper explains to the student that a better way to select a major is to see a career counselor
Toss for Training H This is a ring toss game. We changed it to a “Toss Across” game the second year. H The student tosses a bean bag to select a degree level they will obtain, as well as “Low GPA” and “Probation” just for fun H They receive a degree level certificate after this game to take to the “Putt for Paycheck” game H Again this another opportunity for the gamekeeper to encourage them to visit the CDC
Putt for Paycheck H The student is given a Putter to Putt for a salary H The certificate for Degree level received in the “Toss for Training” game determines the number of putts H The salary amounts are $30,000, $60,000 and $100,000 H This is an opportunity for us to help the student explore the correlation between education level and earnings potential.
Raffle H This will vary with each year H We raffle the most desirable prize(s) H Students earn raffle tickets by winning games (everyone wins!)
Who wants a Career? H In other words “ Who wants to be a Millionaire?” H Our Ring Master leads this game with a contestant answering questions on career issues (our favorite question is: Where is the CDC located on campus?) H A megaphone is very handy for this game
Ring Master / Barker! H This is one of our Career Counselors H Must be outgoing H Willing to talk to anyone and everyone H Can talk more and louder than any of the students H Willing to interrupt students in deep conversation on the Quad
The Prizes H Each year we contact employers that work with us and request donations of items we can give out as prizes for each game. H The response has been overwhelming as boxes of gifts were sent to our office H Some of the items: logo-stamped stress ball, cups, toy lava-lamps, soda huggies, pens, microwave popcorn, key chains, and software H The University Bookstore has even donated items for the raffle H The CDC has included in the raffle a coupon for a free Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Campbell Interest & Skills Survey
Promoting the Event H Advertising on-campus H Flyers posted around campus H Sidewalks Chalked a couple of days before the event H s sent to faculty and staff H Info on the CDC web site
The Cost H The first year we spent only $30.00 ( games, table cloth material, suckers) H The second year we invested money for more permanent games since we had decided to make this an annual event (approx. $980.00) H Each year there after no more money was spent
So - The Outcome ! H Students have come to the CDC after seeing us on the Quad H A more relaxed atmosphere where students are comfortable coming to see a Career Counselor
