4 th Grade Science

 Energy is the ability to work or cause change.  Work means moving an object form one place to another.  Energy makes things happen.  It can make matter move or change.

 Mechanical energy is the energy of moving objects.  Examples: moving your body, riding a bike, gears moving in machines

 Light is energy that we can see.  Light energy comes from the sun.  The sun, burning candle, lightbulb, and match give of energy in the form of light.

 Heat is energy moving from matter with a higher temperature to matter with a lower temperature.  Heat also travels to Earth from the sun.  Many things give off heat including wood burning, your body, and light bulbs.  Most things that give off heat also give off light.

 Sound is energy that we can hear.  Sound is made by objects vibrating.  Sound energy moves through the air in waves.  When sound reaches your ears, the air in your ear vibrates. This makes your parts of your ear vibrate causing you to hear the sound.

 Vibrate means to move back and forth very fast.  All the sounds we hear are from vibrations.

 Chemical energy is energy that is stored in a material.  We use a lot of chemical energy by burning things such as coal, oil, and wood.  Our body burns the chemical energy store in food to keep us alive.  Batteries also store chemical energy.

 Electrical energy is the energy of moving electric charges.  Electrical energy moves from power plants through wires to our homes and schools.  Electrical energy runs things such as lamps, refrigerators, computers, and toasters.  Lightning is also a form of electrical energy.

 Energy transformations are the changes from one form of energy to another.  Electrical energy can be changed into heat, light, sound, and mechanical energy.  Chemical energy can be changed into light, heat, mechanical, and electrical energy.

 This powerpoint was created using Microsoft Office All designs, slides, pictures, fonts, and clipart where gathered from Microsoft Office  This powerpoint was created to go along with Lesson 18 of Tennessee TCAP Coach book, but could be used for any 4 th grade lesson on energy.
