THE TALE OF TWO CITIES AND HOMELESSNESS
Presentation transcript:

By: Janee’ Pressley

What if it was you that was homeless? When was the last time you thought about a homeless person? When was the last time you spoke to a homeless person, asking how they were doing, or maybe just saying hello? Have you ever think that someday maybe you, or someone you know could end up homeless someday? Has someone ever come up to you and asked you for money, and you wondered weather they were going to buy something they really needed, or just buy something to support their addiction? Did you ever think that maybe this person really was homeless, or really did need money?

The Feds Homelessness Prevention This program helps the homeless by giving out fund, building shelters, cooking in soup kitchens, help kids stay in school, and get jobs. 2-3 million people in this world are homeless, and 672,000 people experience homelessness.

Preventing Homelessness in America Proivides rural shelters. Draft plans for people that they want to provide services to. Provide rental assistance funds, reach out to the community, and measure outcomes or services sufficient and effective.

Poverty and Social Services Offer social security programs, provide basic needs to help people, and they have private organizations and charities for low income Americans.

Helping Homelessness Via Meter Established in 16 different cities. They have deposits in meters that go towards charities. Meters in Denver made $100,000 a year through more than 80 meters. $30,000 coin donations and $70,000 from sponsorships of businesses and residents who pay $1,000 a year to sponsor. In Cleveland June 2009-June2010 $100 per week total $5,200 was put into these meters.

CincySmiles Foundation Sandra Bernard is a woman I talked to who works with the CincySmiles Foundation. This program is a homeless dental clinic referred from homeless shelters. They help everyone who meets the requirements of a homeless person. Sandra feels that everyone homeless or needy person deserves help, but only if they want it. She said that some people choose to live in poverty, while others just went through something in their lives like a loss, house fire etc… I asked Ms. Bernard how she felt about having parking meters being put in Cincinnati to help raise money for the homeless, and she agreed with that 100%.

My Plan to Help The Homeless My plan is to put parking meters in Madisonville, Bond Hill, and Downtown Cincinnati. This will be a one year program with two employee’s, including myself and a enforcement worker. I will have the enforcement worker going around every month empting the meters and bringing them back to me. My job is the take the money in the meters count it and split the money between MEAC, which is the food pantry in Madisonville, and The Greater Cincinnati Coalition For The Homeless. These two charities can do whatever they choose with that money.
