1. Omissions  Conception and birth  Baptism  Temptations  Deliverance ministry  Transfiguration  Gethsemane

2. Additions  Miracles (SIGNS)  Water into Wine  Man at Bethesda  Lazarus

2. Additions  People  Nicodemus  Samaritan woman

3. I AM statements  I am the Living Bread  I am the Light of the World  I am the Door  I am the Good Shepherd  I am the Resurrection and the Life  I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life  I am the True Vine

4. North/ South Divide  Matt, Mark and Luke set in north (Galilee) at first, moving to Jerusalem.  John is set in Jerusalem, revolving around the feasts.

5. Language  They use totally different words.  E.g. Feeding 5000  53 words in common Matthew-Mark- Luke  8 in common with John  Even word for fish different!

6. Discussions  In Matthew, Mark, Luke = parables  In John = discussions  Judea wasn’t welcoming to Jesus!

And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. John is boldly presenting Jesus to be God with us. John is boldly presenting Jesus to be God with us.  The 7 "I am" statements of Jesus (John 6:35; 8:12; 8:24; 8:58; 10:7; 10:11; 11:25; 14:6).  The 7 Signs (2:1-11; 4:46-54; 5:1-18; 6:1-14; 6:16-21; 9:1-41; 11:1-44)  Begins with “The Word Was God” and ends with “My Lord and My God”

The Revelation to the Disciples The Revelation to the Disciples  We have found the Messiah" (1:41).  We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote" (1:43).  His disciples believed in Him (2:11).  Jesus said therefore to the twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?" Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. And we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God." (John 6:67-69).  "Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we believe that You came from God" (John 16:33).  So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb entered then also, and he saw and believed (John 20:8).  Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand, and put it into My side; and be not unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:27-28).

 Amen, Amen  Equivalent of underlining words  Emphasis on truth  This is not the good news of the kingdom, it is the good news of eternal life.  Paul “justified by faith” is the same as John’s “born again” or “have everlasting life”

 Gospel to the Greeks (the philosophers)

 In Acts 19, there are disciples of John the Baptist still around.  Morality and repentance without the Holy Spirit  Every mention of John the Baptist in John’s gospel is a put down!  Not the light  Did no miracles  Friend of the Bridegroom  “I must decrease”

 John the Baptist’s value is not in his person, but in his message:  The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world  He will baptise you in the Holy Spirit

 Jesus wept  “Behold the Man”  Hungry  Thirsty  Tired  Surprised  Jesus prayed as a human.  Jesus died a human.

 This is the heart of John’s gospel.  Seven Witnesses that Jesus is God:  John the Baptist  Nathaniel  Peter  Martha  Thomas  The Beloved Disciples  Jesus

 This is the heart of John’s gospel.  Seven signs:  Water into Wine  Healing at a distance  Healing the man sick for 38 years  Feeding the 5000  Walking on water  Giving sight to a man born blind  Resurrection of Lazarus

 This is the heart of John’s gospel.  Seven I AM statements  Three with miracles:  Bread of Heaven  Light of the World  Resurrection and the Life  Four others:  Door, Good Shepherd, Way Truth and Life, True Vine

 Glory of God  We have seen His Glory  Life  Abundant, Eternal  Will not see death  Life is light, death is darkness  No third option!  Life is truth, and truth is freedom  Slavery is not God’s will  Life is knowing God

 Logos  Goes back further than Luke!  Heraclitus – philosopher  Logos – the reason why, the purpose of life  Bio-logy, metero-logy, psycho- logy, etc.

1.Eternal  In the beginning, He was there! 2.Personal  Face to face with God  God is love! 3.God  Not created, not less that God! 4.Human  You can know God because God became Human!
