PSAT Practice SAT Score range from Tests: Critical reading skills Math problem-solving skills Writing skills Qualifies juniors for the National Merit Scholarship Receive information from colleges On Wednesday, October 13, 2010, the PSAT will be administered to 10 th and 11 th grade students through advisement. It is free to all sophomores, IB juniors and top 10% of juniors.

PLAN Tests: English Mathematics Reading Science The PLAN will be administered on Saturday, November 13, at DCHS

SAT The critical reading section includes reading passages and sentence completions. The writing section includes a short essay and multiple-choice questions on identifying errors and improving grammar and usage. The mathematics section includes questions on arithmetic operations, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability. Each section scored on point scale Administered by the College Board

ACT Tests: English Math Writing Science Optional Writing Test Test score and composite score from 1 to 36 Administered by ACT

 All 5 sections must be passed  Writing, Math, English/Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science  Its taken in the 11 th grade  Students must pass to earn a Regular High School diploma

 Students are expected to produce an “on- demand” response to a persuasive writing prompt.  2 hour test administration including 100 minutes of writing time.  The test is administered three times a year; thus students have multiple opportunities to take the test before the end of the twelfth grade

 Main administration of the GHSWT takes place in the fall of the eleventh grade year  Results of the GHSWT are used to identify students who may need additional instruction in academic content and skills considered essential for a high school diploma.

 The GHSWT is a test of persuasive writing  The writer assumes a position on an issue and uses language to influence the reader  The purpose is to express a writer’s opinion on a subject either explicitly or implicitly. Through the support provided, the writer presents a convincing point of view.

 Four year Colleges and Universities many majors offered leading to undergraduate degrees  Two year Colleges offer freshman and sophomore level classes toward an associate degree and/or transfer to a 4 year school  Technical Colleges certificate, diploma and 2-year degree programs leading directly to employment upon completion of specialized training  Special Purpose Schools focus on specific fields such as the arts or medical specialties

Scholarship Information Scholarship information is available in the students’ shared folder and on the DCHS website under Guidance and then News. Don’t forget to check with any local organizations, banks, employers, credit unions and insurance companies  Large database of scholarship information, awards available for academic achievement, special skills and talents, and/or financial need Remember – you should never pay for scholarship searches or information!

 Douglas County Parents/Guardians are now able to join the STAR Parent Portal program. This program is an integral part of our student information system, STAR Student. By joining, parents will have instant online access to their child’s assignments and attendance.

 In order to participate, parents must enroll. If you are interested, please complete the Acceptable Use Policy found on the DCHS website ( m/) and return it to school in person.

 The school will enroll you and give you a user name and temporary password. The account is set up by families and not individual students, so one account will give you access to all your students in the Douglas County School System.
