8 th Grade LA Goals Goals: The students will: Develop a better understanding of language arts encompassing the areas of literature, grammar, and writing Develop skills that lead to independent thinking and learning Develop an appreciation of literature and writing

Textbooks Reading—Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes (Prentice Hall Literature) English—Writing and Grammar, Communications in Action (Prentice Hall) Vocabulary - Sadlier Oxford Vocabulary Workshop

Required Materials Reading textbook English textbook/workbook vocabulary workbook black or blue ink pen different colored pen for grading/correcting paper- loose leaf spiral for each subject folders with pockets Highlighters Notecards post-its

Classroom Policies All classroom rules in the Student Handbook must be followed. Some general classroom rules: Come to class prepared Be on time to class Be respectful of everyone Be responsible Communicate with positive intention

Grading A = 90 – 100% B = 80 – 89% C = 70 – 79% D = 60 – 69% F = 59% and below

Weighting of Grades Student grades are weighted as follows: Homework/class work – 15% Formative (Quiz, project) – 40% Summative (Test, major project, major writing assignment) – 45%

Intentional Design Limitations What the Standards do NOT define: How teachers should teach All that can or should be taught The nature of advanced work beyond the core The interventions needed for students well below grade level The full range of support for English language learners and students with special needs Everything needed to be college and career ready

Summary Standards: Important but insufficient To be effective in improving education and getting all students ready for college, workforce training, and life, the Standards must be partnered with a content-rich curriculum and robust assessments, both aligned to the Standards.
