Map Reading and Interpretation Symbols and Color Coding

Symbols Symbols are everything  Graphics Tend to represent points such as bridges and houses,  Linear Tend to represent roads, railways, rivers Color  Area Represented by color – forested land, crown land

Standards and Specifications for Polychrome Maps  National Topographic System maps utilize these rules  A specific set of rules that guides the use of symbols and colors  Specifically, ensure that on 1:50000 and 1:250000, that the land features depicted are uniform Caution:  Some things change with time, not all maps change at once. Newer editions of 1:50000 and 1: maps use symbols that look different from older maps

Symbols and Color Coding Identify and relate the symbols Topographic Map Symbols - Recreation

Topographic Map Symbols - Elevation

Relief  A geographical term which refers to the differences in elevation on a map  An area of high relief has great variation in height and is rugged  An area of low relief is flatter

Canada Relief Map

Example: Relief Map

Topography  Term that refers to the shape of the land Topography Map  Show the shape by using contour lines to fill in the details of elevation
