Explosive Ordnance Disposal

HISTORY Originated during WWII U.S. Naval Mine Disposal School May 1941 Bomb Disposal School January 1942 EOD created in 1953

INSIGNIA Wreath- symbolic of achievements by minimizing accident potentials Bomb- represents historic and major objective of EOD, three fins represent nuclear, conventional, chemical\biological warfare Lightning Bolts- potential destructive power of the bomb Shield- represents mission of protecting personnel and property

MISSION The job of Navy EOD is to detect, recover, identify, evaluate, render safe and dispose of Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) that constitutes a threat to people, material, installations, ships, aircraft and operations. As the only naval force trained for such an expansive mission, Navy EOD technicians must deal with all types of explosive ordnance as well as weapon delivery systems containing explosives and propellants.

MEANS Use of ships and submersibles play a key role in the detection and destruction of sea mines. EOD not only looks for unexploded ordinance that may pose a threat, but also disposes of unused, aging ordinance in the fleet that poses a threat due to its instability.
