Presentation transcript:

Business Communication: genre analysis. choice of medium. job application preparation. visual design. oral presentation skills. proposal writing. clear, concise, active, grammatically correct prose.

 Working with a partner, grab a sheet of paper. This semester review will take you through important concepts we’ve learned throughout the semester, while asking you to synthesize and act on these concepts. After you answer the questions, we’ll discuss as a class.  Hold onto your notes to review for the final extra credit quiz.

 Define genre analysis and explain why it is important in business communication.

 You work for an advertising agency, and you’re presenting a commercial idea to a potential client. How might you use the rhetorical strategy of ethos to persuade the new client to work with you?

 List everything that is wrong with this memo format:

 How would you correct the letter formatting?

 Revise the following sentences, correcting any comma errors and change any active voice to passive voice to avoid blame:  The office manager has decided that there will be no salary increases this year. She want you to understand this decision is not personal, and that no exceptions will be made. While yearly salary increases are standard in this office they are indeed a luxury.

 Edit for concision:  Each and every one of these parents needs to be really sure their kids do not have lice before they are allowed to come back to school. The reason for the implementation of this policy at this school is due to the fact that lice is very contagious.

 What is one job search tip (i.e., searching web databases and other resources) you learned in this class that you might not have known before?

 What’s wrong with this resume’s job description? Revise the incorrect bullet point: Organized and filed patient medical records Assisted in stocking needed supplies in individual rooms and department Customer service skills were gained

 How would you correct this resume entry?  UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA - Tucson, Arizona: Environmental and Water Resource Economics Major, August May 2014 (expected graduation)   Nassau Community College- May 2010— August 2010, Garden City, New York, Communications Major

 Brainstorm three common errors people tend to make when writing cover letters.

 You’re interviewing someone for a pharmacist position. Write a behavioral interview question you might ask them.

 How would you revise this proposal’s needs statement?  "Breast cancer kills. But statistics prove that regular check-ups catch most breast cancer in the early stages, reducing the likelihood of death. Thus, the United Breast Cancer Foundation’s program to encourage preventive check-ups will reduce the risk of death due to breast cancer. A well-constructed brochure explaining the program will help promote the foundation and ultimately save lives.”

 Revise this sentence: As one of the leading social media companies in Georgia, I hope to contribute my skills to this great organization.

 What should the steps be towards preparing an oral presentation with a visual component?

 Describe how the CRAP principles play out in this advertisement

 Describe how visual coherence, salience, and organization play out in this ad. Overall, is the ad effective? Why or why not?
