Facts about Favelas 19% of Rio de Janeiro’s population live in Favelas Catholicism, Evangelicalism, and Pentecostalism exist in the favelas The original favela was built by the families of soldiers returning from the Canudos Campaign(Civil War)

Efforts by the government In 2007, president Lula announced a 4 year investment plan, which includes the promotion of urban development for the Favelas.

Problems in the Favelas Drug use and crime rates are high in the Favelas Drug sales rake in as much as US$150 million per month The crimes committed lead to murder rates in excess of 40 per inhabitants in the city of Rio, and much higher rates in some Favelas.
