This is how your notebook should look today

Answer the second column of the chart: What is the government doing in each of the pictures?

Remember Cornell Notes? This is how your notes should look today. Main Ideas, Purposes of Government Descriptions of each purpose

One purpose of government is MAINTAINING SOCIAL ORDER… If you do this… what’s going to happen? One purpose of government is MAINTAINING SOCIAL ORDER… The government does this by making laws that protect the community and enforcing them.

Another purpose of government is PROTECTING INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS! Of course, sometimes the gov’t does a pretty bad job of it… The government is supposed to stand up for people’s rights when they can’t stand up for themselves….

Another purpose of government is to MAKE ECONOMIC DECISIONS. Makes (coins) Money Collects Taxes Funds Government Programs Provides Financial Aid to Citizens and Foreign Nations

Another purpose of government is PROVIDING PUBLIC SERVICES. The government collects taxes from citizens, but it uses that money to provide services to benefit the community… Things Like: Public Transportation & Public Schools

Protect National Security The government uses its military and police forces to protect its citizens from attack! Bang!

Now, flip back and try again Now, flip back and try again. In the third column, answer which PURPOSE OF GOV’T is shown in the pictures.

Maintaining Social Order!

PROVIDING PUBLIC SERVICES!

PROTECTING INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS!

PROVIDING NATIONAL DEFENSE!

MAKING ECONOMIC DECISIONS!

Your group will receive a picture. Collaborate with your group to determine which PURPOSE OF GOVERNMENT the picture is displaying. Choose one member of your group who will report out to the class.
