What is AVID? AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective class that assists students in their preparation for admission into four-year universities. The three main components of the program are: Academic instruction through tutorial support Note taking and organizational methodologies College exploration and motivational activities.

What are the benefits of AVID? AVID Mission The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students: succeed in rigorous curriculum, will complete a rigorous college preparatory path, will enter mainstream activities of the school, will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

How will the AVID program contribute to the success of students? Offers personalized support and counseling Provides daily interaction, motivation, and accountability Teaches study and organizational skills Provides “Tutorial” help through college and high school tutors Teaches students to work collaboratively to be successful in the most rigorous courses

How will the AVID program contribute to the success of students? Strengthens student Analytical Ability & Writing Skills linked to the Common Core Takes students to visit colleges and universities Assists students with the application process for four-year colleges and universities Helps students explore careers pathways Personalized attention to assist in student growth and maturation. Test Preparation for the SAT / ACT

What percentage of AVID students complete college entrance requirements? 9 AVID students complete four-year college entrance requirements at a rate at least two times higher than the national rate

MVUSD High School AVID Currently: 30 Sections at three high schools Approx. 900 Students, 16 AVID Elective Teachers + AVID Counselors and AVID Administrators National College Going rate to complete 4-year college entrance requirements: National (Non-AVID): 36% National (AVID): 93% MVUSD (AVID): 98% Acceptance Rate to 4-year University

AVID Expectations Individual Determination (AVID is a choice not a requirement) – It’s an Attitude! Adopt the AVID Methodologies- It is the AVID Way! Meet the AVID Profile- 1 st Generation Traditional 4-Year Bound, Work Ethic, Academic Potential, Circumstances Maintain a Competitive Grade Point Average-College Track (Tutoring/ Probation/ Dismissal) Complete a Rigorous Course of Study (minimum 1 Advanced Placement/ IB Course/ Dual Enrollment Course before graduation= 40% increase in college readiness) Actively Participate on Campus (sports, clubs, band, leadership etc.)

What Do I Do Now? Download the AVID on the District’s webpage Complete all parts of the application and return to your Middle School Student Services Office (Counselor’s Office) by March 3:00 pm Take Part in an AVID Interview Shivela: April 10-11, 2014 Thompson: April 17-18, 2014 Warm Springs: April 10, 2014 DMMS: April District Coordinator from each site will notify by the first week of May of acceptance- will give information on Acceptance Night for each specific school Get the best grades possible- Finish Strong!!
