Learning Objectives What is Tourism? What are the environments that favour tourism? What is a National Park? What activities can we do in a National Park?

Introduction to Tourism (Useful Definitions) In your groups, try to come up with and agree on a definition for each of the following. TOURISM NATURAL RESOURCES HUMAN RESOURCES

Introduction to Tourism (Useful Definitions) Tourism: Visiting places away from home and work for leisure purposes. Tourism: Visiting places away from home and work for leisure purposes. Natural Resources: These are attractions that occur naturally e.g. mountains, beaches etc. Natural Resources: These are attractions that occur naturally e.g. mountains, beaches etc. Human Resources: These are attractions that are built by people e.g. theme parks, bars, museums etc. Human Resources: These are attractions that are built by people e.g. theme parks, bars, museums etc.

What is a National Park? What is the environment like? Make a list of people who use National Parks for leisure activities and name the activities they might do. (e.g. Ramblers for walking etc.) Can you think of any other groups who use the National Parks?

What is a National Park? A National Park can be defined as “an area of beautiful and relatively wild countryside” They were created by an act of parliament in 1949 to preserve the countryside and promote people’s enjoyment of the countryside.

Who uses the National Parks? Walkers Tourists Fishermen Day Visitors Water-sports (Skiing etc) Mountaineers Mountain Bikers Bird watchers

Who else uses the National Parks? Ministry of Defence Farmers Local People Conservationists National Park Authority Forestry Quarry owners / workers Water suppliers
