The Caddo Indians By: Abby Norton

Food The Caddo were farmers and hunters who lived in East Texas. They planted crops in large clearings in the woods. They raised corn, beans and squash. They also hunted the deer, turkey, rabbits, squirrels and other animals in the pine woods around them.

Clothing and Appearance The Caddo grew cotton. They spun the threads and dyed the threads with vegetable dyes. The women would then weave beautiful cotton fabrics. They would use bead work and embroidery to decorate their clothing.

Homes The Caddo lived in tall cone shaped grass huts. To build a hut, they made a wood frame and covered it with cut cane and long grasses. These huts were furnished inside with furniture and were quite comfortable.

More Food They planted crops in large clearings in the woods. They raised corn, beans and squash. They also hunted the deer, turkey, rabbits, squirrels and other animals in the pine woods around them.

Region The Caddo lived in the southeastern coastal plains. The Caddo lived in east Texas in the piney forest. Their territory extended into Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

Interesting Facts! Caddo Indians in Texas mined salt from underground mines, which they boiled down to use for their cooking.
