Movement offers many benefits to children: * Helps brain development * Promotes Self Concept * Enhances Self Esteem * Social skills * Promotes an active lifestyle to last a lifetime.

* Childhood obesity is more prevalent each day. * 15.7% of kids are OVERWEIGHT * 16.3% of kids are OBESE * 70% of obese children will grow up to become obese adults

Benefits Include: * Weight Control * Blood Pressure Control * Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease * Reduce Risk of certain Cancers (colon, stomach, etc.) * Reduce Risk of Diabetes * Increased quality of life and psychological well-being

Heart Disease is the #1 killer in the country. Preventable Risk Factors: * Sedentary lifestyle * Smoking * High Blood Pressure * High Cholesterol * Obesity Solution? GET ACTIVE… children need at least minutes of physical activity each day.

The Family should work as a team to promote a healthy lifestyle and activity. * Use physical activity as a reward (family goes to the park, rather than food) * Buy toys/games that promote activity * Limit children’s “screen time” (TV, videogames, computer) * Exergaming= Wii fit, Xbox Kinect * Exercise as a FAMILY UNIT

* Use pedometers * Bike Rides, Treadmills in front of TV * Commercial Break exercises/fitness * Sign up children for Sport Teams in Community * Promote “Play dates” for physical activity
