Investigating the Design Context. 1.Analysis of context 1 sheet . Brainstorm the problem. Use lateral thinking to think around the problem. Write keywords that relate to the problem. They may relate to questions beginning with who, where, why, or when. Problems can also be seen as opportunities so consider wider applications. Think divergently by allowing your thoughts to branch out in all directions. Keep focusing on the problem/opportunity and its situation rather than jumping to solutions. Identify research required Analysis 4. Specific Research 2 sheets . Research specific aspects of information and present summaries of your research. For example this could be measurements of components or parts you need in order to be able to develop your design, or space available, possible sensing devices, motors, and other output, mechanical fixings , weight of items. A good mind-map will lead you to good specific research. Specific Research 2.Situation, Brief and Target Market 1 sheet The situation ‘sets the scene’ for your project and explains the problem, who it involves and shows everyday examples which highlight the need for such a product. Identify your target market and complete an end user profile. Include photos with annotation and statistics to back up your claims. The Design Brief: A short, concise but precise description of what the product you are designing has to be able to do. It should explain ’in a nut shell’ what the design has to fulfil 5. Specification 1 sheet . A bullet pointed or numbered list of clear, specific and reasoned criteria which you would want your design to meet. This will come from your research and conclusions. You will use your list to assess your ideas and the end product so it is important that it is realistic and that it contains criteria that can be measured e.g. Speed or size. Specification 3. Research and Analysis 2 sheets Research at least 3 examples of existing solutions and/or systems explaining how they work in relation to input, process, output, materials and processes used. How well do they work? What could be improved Analyse your research and draw conclusions to identify features you may want to incorporate or improve upon. 6. Initial Ideas - Case/Overall product 2 sheets Initial sketches with annotation to show possible product solutions. Must include analysis of the ideas to show advantages/disadvantages and compliance to the specification Initial Ideas - Case

Include any relevant calculations and notes to help explain the ideas. 7. Possible mechanical/system ideas 1 sheet Analyse and choose from different mechanisms for your product.
