7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Adapted from Sean Covey

Who Am I? I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things I do you might just as well turn over to me and I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.

I am easily managed-you must merely be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done and after a few lessons, I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great individuals and, alas, of all failures, as well. Those who are great, I have made great. Those who are failures, I have made failures.

I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a human. You may run me for profit or run me for ruin-it makes no difference to me.

Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you.

Who Am I!

Habit

What are some habits?

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Sean Covey Dr. Stephen Covey – …Highly Effective People

#1 Be Proactive What is proactive? “People are just about as happy as they make up their mind to be.” Abraham Lincoln A Can-do attitude vs. No-Can-Do attitude

Can-Do vs. No-Can-Do Can-Do Take initiative to make it happen Think about solutions and options Act No-Can-Do Wait for something to happen to them Think about problems and barriers Are acted upon

#2 Begin with the End in Mind Have goals. Write them down. Why? “Control Your Own Destiny or Someone Else Will” Sean Covey

#3 Put First Things First What are your priorities? – You can tell a person’s priorities by how they spend their time Agree or Disagree Have a Plan – Make a schedule and identify the MAJOR activities Time is precious, you don’t want to lose any of it doing something not worthwhile

Consider this… To realize the value of one year, Ask a student who failed his or her AP exams. To realize the value of one month, Ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of one week, Ask an editor of a weekly magazine. To realize the value of one day, Ask a daily wage laborer who has six kids to feed. To realize the value of one hour, Ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of one minute, Ask a person who missed their train. To realize the value of one second, Ask the person who survived an accident. To realize the value f one millisecond, Ask a person who won a silver medal at the Olympics.

#4 Think Win-Win Win-Lose Totem Pole – Someone is always better than you and someone is better than them and so on…

Lose – Win Doormat – If someone has to win, I should lose because I am helping them.

Lose-Lose The Downward Spiral – If I am going down, then you are going down with me

Win-Win: The All-You-Can-Eat Buffet

# 5 Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood To be understood is the deepest need of the human heart. “Before I can walk in another’s shoes, I must first remove my own.” Unknown Communication Skills – Listening is more important that talking You have TWO ears and ONE mouth. – Argument with parents/siblings/friends

#6 Synergize Synergy Is… – Celebrating differences – Teamwork – Open mindedness – Finding new and better ways Synergy is NOT… – Tolerating Differences – Working independently – Thinking you’re always right – Compromise

#7 Sharpen the Saw “Me time!” “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” – John F. Kennedy Take care of yourself: – Body – Brain – Heart – Soul
