Brainstorming and Determining Your Audience

Do Now How would the audience for a short story about talking dolphins be different from an informational article on endangered killer whales?

Who is your audience? Audience = who you are writing for; the people who are most likely to read your writing Difference audiences can change my: Tone Word Choice Choice of examples or reasons Depth of explanation

Example- “Social media sites like Facebook can have a very negative impact on teenagers. These sites can cause teenagers to lose valuable time and to engage in inappropriate behaviors.” “Facebook is awesome for talking to my friends and trying to meet up with people. I can check out pictures of people I like and I can send them messages. Why wouldn’t someone like Facebook?!?”

Example 1- When I was in preschool, I didn’t understand anything. I hated the class. It was a terrible year for me. I’ve ran away from my teacher, and I always talked back. I usually got on red almost every day. I went to LOW Childcare, and I went there all the way till 4 th grade. I stopped because one of the teachers were mean to me, and I love it there, I just hated the teachers.

Example 2 How it will improve people’s attitude. It will rub off you onto the others and they will be happy. It can make them forget.

Example 3 Life happens. Tragedy strikes. I feel that if we have a good idea, we can stay calm, and therefore overcome any obstacle or problem thrown in your way. If police, firefighters, or other everyday heroes didn’t have a good attitude or didn’t stay calm, they would have little to no success. This would increase a number of casualties and make it a less effective rescue. This would mean that having a good attitude can save lives. It also takes less time to get the job done if you stay calm and have a good attitude.

Why is Ms. Rave nagging me about brainstorming? Writing is a great way to express yourselves- never know, you might be awesome at it! Audiences (all of them) want to read creative, thoughtful, complex ideas. The quality of your ideas is a major part of your SOL Writing score. Being a better, more creative writer makes you a better reader too!

What does a good brainstorm look like? LOTS of ideas No filter! Some will be good ideas, some will be bad. Keep audience in mind. Think of a reason or example- then think of details/info you can give about that reason or example

Pick one! Should students be allowed to use phones in school? Should boys and girls attend the same school, or should they be separated? Should all students be required to take gym? What are the most important qualities in a friend?
