WHY A MENSTRUAL CYCLE? Every month, an ovary releases one egg cell. The egg cell goes into the oviduct, towards the uterus. Fertilisation by a sperm must happen in the oviduct. When the fertilised egg reaches the uterus, it will implant. The uterus must be ready. If the egg is not fertilised, it will be released, with the wall of the uterus. That is menstruation.
