Case series/Clinical series It is a medical research descriptive study that tracks patients with a known exposure given similar treatment or examines their medical records for exposure and outcome. It can be retrospective or prospective and usually involves a smaller number of patients than more powerful case-control studies or randomized controlled trials. Case series may be consecutive or non-consecutive, depending on whether all cases presenting to the reporting authors over a period were included, or only a selection.

Case series/Clinical series Case series may be confounded by selection bias, which limits statements on the causality of correlations observed;  for example, physicians who look at patients with a certain illness and a suspected linked exposure will have a selection bias in that they have drawn their patients from a narrow selection (namely their hospital or clinic).

Clinical Research The branch of medical science devoted to finding information that improves people's health. It includes research studies that examine the safety and effectiveness of medications, medical devices, diagnostic tests, and treatment regimens intended for human use. Usually, more than one person with the same disease is studied.

Clinical Research For example: The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) is a national clinical research study composed of several study components. The WHI includes : a)A randomized controlled clinical trial of promising but unproven approaches to prevention; b) An observational study to identify predictors of disease; and c)A study of community approaches to developing healthful behaviours.

Clinical Research Related terms Clinical Trial Cohort Cohort Study Data External Validity Head-to-Head Trial Inclusion Criteria Off-Label Use Open-Label Study Prospective Observational Study Randomized Controlled Trial Study

Clinical Trial A carefully conducted research study that compares the effects of drugs, treatments, or diagnostic tests. For example: In a randomized controlled clinical trial to understand whether calcium tablets work to prevent broken bones in women with low bone density, women with low bone density in one group are randomly assigned to receive calcium and women with low bone density in another group are randomly assigned to the control group and receive a placebo (inactive substance). The numbers of women who suffer fractures in each group are compared to find out whether calcium works.
