What does each letter for FANBOYS stand for?

For And Nor But Or Yet So

FANBOYS Are words for combining that put together two complete sentences

How does this connect with run-ons and fragments? Which of the sentences is a fragment? 1. She entered law school. 2. And she entered law school. 3. But she entered law school. 4. Entered law school.

If a sentence begins with a FANBOY, it is a full sentence. NOT A FRAGMENT.

But what about these sentences?... Which of the following sentences are fragments? 1. She entered law school. 2. Because she entered law school. 3. If she entered law school. 4. While she entered law school 5. Although she entered law school. 6. Yet she entered law school.

What do these words do? Although, though, even though, whereas, while, because since, as, if, unless, after, before, until, when, as soon as, while, since (Non-FANBOY combination words)

They combine DEPENDENT and INDEPENDENT clauses in a sentence.

What do you think an INDEPENDENT clause is?

It is a complete sentence. It is independent and doesn’t need anything else to be complete Example: She is pretty. But he didn’t like the loud noise.

What do you think a DEPENDENT clause is?

It is a part of a sentence that NEEDS to be connected to a full sentence. Example: Because she was afraid, she called her mom. He called his Dad because he needed money. If you are lost, you should call me. You should call me if you need anything.

When do you need to put a comma in a sentence with an independent and dependent clause? Examples: While you were sleeping, I waited for you. Dependent Independent I waited for you while you were sleeping. Independent Dependent

Answer You need to put a comma after the dependent clause if the dependent clause is first. Where is the independent clause here? If the dependent clause is first, you need to put a comma after it. Where is the independent clause here?

When do you put a comma in a sentence with a FANBOY?

Example: I love you, but I’m afraid to get married. I love you but am afraid to get married. He is lost, and he doesn’t know where to go. He is lost and doesn’t know where to go.

Answer: Put a comma in front of the FANBOY if two COMPLETE sentences are being connected.

Matching activity Listen closely to my instructions We are going to complete a partner activity with FANBOYS and INDEPENDENT/DEPENTENT clauses.
