Presentation transcript:

N.G.G.C A gaming console which can be used as a generic multimedia device It has different built in modes such as the COMPUTER MODE, THE SET-TOP BOX MODE etc in which it can be used The basic concept here being that we can have a single device connected to some of the Digital Devices in a home. Can perform multiple tasks at the same time. The Basic Idea behind this is to use this system for purposes such as entertainment (watching T.V., playing games etc), working (online transactions, using an editing software for school/office work, using the internet). It can be used by multiple users at the same time accessing it from different locations. It provides most of the features of a home computer system.

USERS Initially targeted for Domestic use (i.e. use in the household environment). The system is designed keeping a novice user in mind. Attributes of the user such as age, sex, computer literacy etc would help but do not matter as such. One time investment for the user. Since the system will incorporate features of a computer system with internet, editors etc. the user need not buy a computer system. The same goes for an external DVD player The only thing multiple users need is a T.V. or a monitor to use the system independently Multiple users can also use the system mutually in different modes such as watching Television, playing games together or browsing the internet while talking on the phone Users need to provide a Mandatory feedback about the system so that it can be improved Users can each have the system configured according to their needs The multiple user mode will always require one of the users to be an administrator

DESIGN ISSUES It will require a a large Hard disk to handle enormous amounts of data. Context Switch Overheads Display issues (Can be used with a monitor or a Television) New design in system Architecture Initial setup of the system Ego Issues about who should be the administrator and who should be given rights Security issues Searching requires a lot of the system resources. Powerful Processing to avoid lag when multiple modes are being used at once.

OPTIONS The system will have an options on each page. However, the options are generic on the home page and become a little more specific (w.r.t the mode being used). on the subsequent pages Some of the generic options are as follows: Manage user accounts. Security Settings. Network Settings. Date and Time Settings. Display Settings Audio Settings Check for updates The options specific to a mode are as follows: (As an example we consider the computer mode) Personal Settings Appearance Settings Wireless Options Anti-Virus/Anti-spy ware options Manage system files

SEARCH Like the options mode the search mode too, is divided into a Generic search and specific search (w.r.t the mode being used). The search options for this system have been designed in a different way i.e. they will go into the help mode if the search option is not understood. The generic search would have a link to Google as one of the options. The other options ask the user if he/she would like to look in a specific mode. The specific search options are faster. They are a little more accurate too. And the results are also generally better when compared to the generic search options

Help Covers all the topics of the system Index searches possible. In the question format too. Standard F1 shortcut key for going to the Help menu

SCENARIOS Consider 4 family members using the system: XYZ – Father ABC – Mother DEF – Son GHI –Daughter Consider XYZ has to do some monetary transaction online (Let’s say he’s paying the bills). Lets say he is midway through paying a bill when he receives a call. A telephone icon will flash on the screen along with a ringing sound (depending on the user settings). All he needs to do is press the hardware function key (or click on the icon) and switch to the telephone mode. Now if the phone is for ABC she can either pick up the phone physically which is connected to the N.G.G.C or she can start a VOIP or/and Video Conferencing (provided XYZ does not mind and the person calling has the same capability) or if she has a monitor connected elsewhere so that she can start a video conference. Another scenario is DEF is using the gaming mode i.e. he is playing a game and GHI wants to burn a CD. The game can be paused and the mode is simply switched to the MEDIA PLAYER MODE where XYZ can start burn a CD when DEF continues playing his game. The entire family is sitting and watching Television or DEF and his friend are playing a game in one room and in another room the remaining members are watching television.

FUTURE SCOPE If the system receives a good feedback from users at home it can be used as a central system in offices. (However the system needs to be heavily modified.) The system has been designed so that it can be upgraded easily. The system in the future could be connected to many more devices such as the air – conditioner, refrigerator, mobile device etc.
