 All courses, except SPE 3300, are taken on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule.  SPE 3300 should be taken on opposite days or after 5:00.

 The purpose of the practicum is to provide you with a placement in a school with a diverse population.  Your field placement is in one elementary school classroom in either Burke or Wilkes County.  The CI 3000 portion of the practicum consists of 8 full – days (Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) and the SPE 3300 portion consists of 4 full – days (Fridays).  Bus transportation will be provided for the CI 3000 portion of thus experience.

 Over the course of the program, you should have the following experiences:  Diversity in districts for your field placements  Diversity in grade levels for your field placements  Diversity in working with groups of people based on ethnicity, race, SES, gender, exceptionalities, language, religion, sexual orientation, and geographical area.

 Conducting criminal background checks on preservice teachers participating in field experiences is a normal procedure for all school systems.  Criminal background checks are conducted through the Office of Field Experiences.  This process must be completed before you will be assigned a block.

 You must maintain a 2.5 GPA.  You will not be allowed in any Block II courses without a C or better in each Block I course.

 In CI 3000 (Learner Diversity) you will participate in a 10-hour service-learning project.  The purpose is to learn how to connect the service that you do to the concepts presented in your Learner Diversity course.  This provides you with hands-on experience with the issues that diverse learners face so that you will know how to handle these issues when you encounter them as a teacher.

 As always you must make an appointment at posted times to meet with your advisor prior to early registration.  Greg Galvin, our elementary education program area advisor, is also able to meet with you.

 Complete the pre-registration form.  You will be placed in a Block I section based on the information you provide.  Geographic information (diversity of placements)  Schedule of courses  Notify us immediately if you need to make a change.  You will be notified of your placement and given a permit to register except for your SPE course. **YOU NEED TO SCHEDULE SPE 3300 (sections ) and the corresponding field placement (SPE ) on your own. Be sure to register for the Elementary Education SPE 3300 field placement.

 Apply for a graduation check in the Dean’s Office during your Block I semester.  This check will help us to ensure that you are on target to graduate with your course requirements fulfilled after you have completed your student teaching semester.

During the semester that you take Block I, one year before you student teach, you need to apply for student teaching. The student teaching handbook is available online at the RCOE website.
