About the interview

Q1.1:Do you need to use English to communicate at work? A1:Seldom. Q1.2:How important is it for you to use English to communicate? A: Because most of the tourists who I deal with are traveling in Southeast Asia, the opportunities for me to speak English are very few.

Q2.1: With what media and on what occasion do you use English to communicate (phone, conference, , or face-to face enquiry)? A2.1: Phone and face-to face enquiry. Q2.2: What are the purposes of the communication (books, greeting, answering enquiries, or introduction)? A2.2:All of the above.

Q3.1: What language communication problems do you have? A3.1: Unable to understand what foreigners are talking about. Q3.2: What strategies and resources do you use to solve the problems? A3.2: Listen and get in touch with foreigners much more. In addition, reading English newspaper and magazines is one of the good approaches as well.

Q4.1: What cross-cultural communication problems do you have? A4.1: About seven years ago, I took my clients to Philippines. Since the local tour guide overslept, he requested me to lead the tourists to get on the bus first. The local bus driver saw us and asked me to count the number of the tourists, in order to out if anyone was absent. The problem was that the driver had an accent, in addition, my English was poor. So we could not understand each other and we made a lot of unintelligible gestures for about half a day until the local tour guide came to rescue me.

Q4.2: What strategies and resources do you use to solve the problems? A4.2: Just tried my best to make understand what I wanted to say.

Q5.1: How do you think about the problem solving experience? A5.1: Terrible! I felt embarrassed, because my clients was watching me and expect me that I could deal with the embarrassing circumstance. Q5.2: How important is it for you? A5.2: Since then, I tried a variety of approaches and did my best to enhance my English and that incident also encouraged me to become a bilingual tour guide.

Q6: How do you improve your language and cultural competence? A6: Read the New York Times every week and watch the Studio Classroom everyday.

Q7: What help do you think the government, the society or the company should provide to help workers improve their English competence? A7: I think the company should assist its employees to enhance English ability. For instance, the company can provide subsidy for employees to take extra English classes after work.

Q8: What suggestion do you have for school English education? A8: I think a variety of professional knowledge may advances with time. What we had learned at school might be obsolete nowadays. It is much more important for students to enhance the abilities of foreign language and crisis management.

Thank you for your listening..
