Topic list one: Some famous sayings and great educationists to share with you.

Some famous sayings about education:  Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance. --- Will Durant  Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. --- William Yeats  Education is the transmission of civilization. --- Will Durant  The one real object of education is to have a man in the condition of continuously asking questions. --- M. Creighton  The education of a man is never completed until he dies. --- Robert E Lee

1. He who learns but does not think is lost; he who thinks but does not learn is in great danger. 学而不思则罔, 思而不学则殆 2. Exploring the old and deducing the new makes a teacher. 温故而知新, 可以为师也 3. To learn and at due times to repeat what one has learnt, is that not after all a pleasure? 学而时习之, 不亦悦乎 ?

He was one of China’s greatest thinkers and educationists. His teachings have known as Confucianism. Confucius was the first to start a private school which accepted students from all classes of the country. He stimulated his students to think by posing questions. His Philosophy was based on 仁 (the principle of acting with love and kindness) and 礼 (acting according to custom and ceremony when with other people in order to show respect and kindness).

He believed education can save our country and thought life itself was education. He first put forward the theory that people should be educated in society and founded the “Life Education” theory, which later came to an important part of education in China. “the model of teachers forever” “2000 years ago, we had Confucius, and now 2000 years later, we have Mr. Tao Xingzhi”

A famous American educator. She had very bad eyesight herself, but she worked with the deaf and blind girl Helen Keller for 49 years and attended college with her to translate the lectures into her hand and helped Keller become a famous writer.

China VS the USA

I would like to know your opinion. With the first Confucius institute being founded in 2004 and the US House of representatives passing a resolution to commemorate 2560 anniversary of the birth of Confucius, there is more and more schools of Confucius appearing in many foreign countries. What is the Confucius Institute like in America?

Topic list two General Comparison of education in China and the USA

Class size: Teaching style: Homework: Exams: in China bigger class size A mixture of “student-centered learning” and” teacher-centered learning” Much homework national exams

What is it like in American schools? I am eager to know:

Teacher-centred VS Student-centred: Topic list three

* Teacher-centred: more formal, traditional, teacher guides students through the method of solving problem step by step. Students do similar problem for homework. * Student-centred: Teacher asks question or gives problem and students find their own answer to the question or their own way to solve the problem.

How can we balance them? I am eager to know your opinion.

Thank you very much
