Chapter II – Heracles (Hercules) Next
Heracles Heracles was the son of the god Zeus and the woman Alcmene. Being the son of a god, he was very strong from the day of birth. The goddess Hera was made very angry when she heard of Heracles birth – Zeus was Hera’s husband – she want him to have children with other women. She sent two snakes to strangle Heracles as a baby but Hercules, being so strong, ended up strangling them! Heracles grew up to be the strongest man in the world. He married a woman called Megara, who he had two children with. Even now, Hera was still angry at Heracles and Zeus. Hera sent a madness on Heracles and he killed his wife and children. When Hera let Heracles come to his own senses, he was very disappointed with himself. He also realised that he needed to search for a way to make the gods forgive him. He went to Delphi and asked Apollo what he needed to do. He said Heracles needed to do 12 difficult jobs for Eurystheus, King of Argos. When Heracles completed these 12 labours, Apollo said he was forgiven for the crime he had committed. Not only that, Apollo said that Heracles would be a god after death. Heracles married another woman – Deianira but a half man, half horse (Nessus) kidnapped her. Heracles – being the hero that he was – took Deianira back and shot Nessus dead. While Nessus was slowly dieing, he convinced Deianira that if she smeared Nessus’ blood on Heracles, it would make Heracles love Deianira forever – so she smeared over Heracles cloak. When Heracles but the cloak on, Nessus’ blood burnt Heracles all over his body. The ‘love potion’ turned out to be poison. The pain was so intense, he killed himself. In his afterlife, he became a god, as Apollo said he would. Questions

Chapter III – Apollo Next
Apollo Apollo was the god of prophecy, music and healing. Like most of the gods, he always liked to get himself involved with humans. After all, he was the one who killed the mighty Achilles. Achilles was a greatly feared warrior in the Trojan war – he was by far the most skilled in fighting. He easily defeated the Trojan captain hector. Achilles had only one weak spot – his heal. Apollo, helped by Hector’s brother, shot Achilles dead with a single arrow (In the heel). As the god of music, Apollo was often seen and painted playing a lyre. This was a thank you gift to Apollo from Hermes for stealing cattle for him. Although Apollo invented the lute, he was still very skilled at playing the lyre. Apollo had won music contests with the lyre; in one case, he had beaten Pan, who played the Shepard's pipe, his own invention. At this same contest, King Midas dared to say he preferred Pan’s music, so Apollo turned his ears into those of a donkey’s. Questions
