About Video What is it and how does it work?

What do you think? How accessible is video in today’s society? Where can you watch videos, movies, and TV shows? How inexpensive /expensive is it to make a video? What looks (visually) better, film or video? On a bigger scale, what does it take to get a big project movie/video made?

What is video? According to Webster’s Dictionary 2: a recording of a motion picture or television program for playing through a television set b : a videotaped performance of a song often featuring an interpretation of the lyrics through visual images 3 : a recording similar to a videotape but stored in digital form (as on an optical disk or a computer's hard drive)

Video vs. Film Video and Film are two totally different mediums for shooting and storing footage for a production. Video stores the image and sound on a single cassette or memory card. Video is portable and cheap.

Video vs. Film Film has a rich and vibrant color quality. Film is less tolerant of different light levels. More cumbersome for editing.

Production Cycles

What do you Think….if at all? Take out a sheet of paper. List ten things you think you need to do to get a movie made. Steps Processes Procedures Materials

Pre-Production Scripting Storyboarding Scouting locations Set design Costume design Securing Talent

Scripting Writing the dialogue and direction for the production.

Storyboarding A visual representation of a scene drawn out in panels like a cartoons or graphic novels.

Storyboards A visual map that helps you reach your destination of a finished film/video Not an end-all-be-all layout.

Scouting Locations and Set Design Finding places to shoot your movie/video Not always the location indicated in the movie Money plays a factor in location.

Costume Design Creating costumes that represent the time period the movie/video takes place in. A person in the 1700’s would not wear jeans and a white T-shirt.

Securing Talent Finding the best possible actor/s to play the many roles that your production requires.
