SEPOYS, MUGALS, AND THE BRITISH IN INDIA

 For many years India was seen as the brightest jewel in the crown of Queen Victoria.  India was the key to great wealth in the business world.  While India was valuable to the British for its resources.  They placed less value on its social institutions. THE BRIGHTEST JEWEL

 This was especially true of the system of government.  When the British first arrived in India the British East India Company was kept under control by the ruling Mugal Dynasty.  By 1700 the Mugal Dynasty was failing and the British East India Company was the leading power in India. CONTINUED…..

 A Muslim dynasty that ruled most of northern India from the early 16th to the mid-18th century  It continued to exist as a reduced powerless entity until the mid-19th century. MUGAL DYNASTY

 The British rule was supported by several maharajahs  These were Indian Princes who ruled small sections of the nation  They were the equivalent of the nobles in France THE BRIGHTEST JEWEL

 The company even had its own private army  The army was trained and led by British officers but the soldiers were Indians  They were known as Sepoys  The soldiers were highly trained and effective CONTINUED…

 The Sepoys were not loyal to Britain however  The rebellion was sparked by the fact that the British used animal fat to seal their rifle cartridges  This was a major problem because the Indians were either Hindus or Muslims THE GREAT REBELLION

 The rebellion started in Meerut but soon spread to Delhi  Soon all of the Sepoys were rebelling against the British rule in India  The British were forced to send troops to India to restore their control  It took over a year for the British East India Company to return to power in India CONTINUED…

 After the rebellion Britain seized direct control of India  India was then ruled from London as opposed to being ruled by local officials  The maharajas were rewarded by remaining independent  The rest of India became knows as the rah  The British instituted a policy of industrialization AFTER THE REBELLION

 They build railways and strengthened the economy  However many of the benefits of the industrialization did not go to the Indians but to the British  The Indian began to resent European rule but the British only tightened their hold by moving into Burma and Afghanistan CONTINUED…

 The British came to totally dominate the culture and the government of India  The Indian people only existed for the benefit of the Europeans OVERVIEW
