Abstract Liana Frey  Ann Gleason  Nikki Johnson  Jenna Laube  Crystal Schmitt  Kelsey Switters Women’s Studies  University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Liana Frey  Ann Gleason  Nikki Johnson  Jenna Laube  Crystal Schmitt  Kelsey Switters Women’s Studies  University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire The aim of our Women’s Studies Capstone project was to find out the prevalence of different types of sex work and prostitution in the Chippewa Valley, while also addressing HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. This is the first part of an ongoing project between the Women’s Studies Program and the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin (ARCW). The ARCW had no formal research on sex work in the Chippewa Valley; because of this, outreach and prevention services for individuals who engage in sex work were limited. Tangible evidence of sex work in the area will help ARCW receive funding for prevention work. We accumulated preliminary information based on public data, police records, literature reviews, and interviews with county and non-profit officials. The alliances we established can be maintained by future Women’s Studies Capstone students. Prevalence of Sex Work in the Chippewa Valley: Preliminary Research Prevalence of Sex Work in the Chippewa Valley: Preliminary Research Sex Work, Prostitution, & HIV/AIDS Prevention What is Sex Work? The formal or informal exchange of sex acts for anything of value, such as food, money, drugs, clothing, or shelter. When sex work as described above is done as a consequence of poverty or economic dependence, it may be referred to as survival sex. Significant Findings from Literature Review Economic necessity was often identified as the source of their prostitution involvement but alcohol or drug addiction is often what sustained their participation. Sallmann, J. (2010). Going “hand-in-hand”: Connections between women’s prostitution and substance abuse. Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions, 10, Participants who reported having engaged in prostitution were three times more likely to be positive for HIV than those who did not report a history of prostitution. Participants who were victims of abuse and neglect during childhood were more than twice as likely as those who were not victims to be positive for HIV in middle adulthood. One of the strongest relationships for females found in the study was that physical abuse during childhood frequently led to prostitution and early sexual contact (this relationship was not found with the male participants). Wilson, H. W., & Widom, C. S. (2008). An examination of risky sexual behavior and HIV in victims of child abuse and neglect: A 30-year follow-up. Health Psychology, 27(2), Male participants who identified as homosexual were more likely to use condoms during sex acts with non- clients than were non-gay identified participants. Smith, M. D., & Seal, D. W. (2007). Sexual behavior, mental health, substance use, and HIV risk among agency-based male escorts in a small U.S. city. International Journal of Sexual Health, 19(4), Homeless individuals who reported sharing needles were 5.1 times as likely to have a history of survival sex as those who had not shared needles. Homeless gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth and young adults were 1.7 times more likely to have engaged in survival sex than their heterosexual counterparts. Walls, N. E., & Bell, S. (2011). Correlates of engaging in survival sex among homeless youth and young adults. Journal of Sex Research, 48(5), We thank the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for supporting this research, and Learning & Technology Services for printing this poster. Our Vision “The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin envisions a world without AIDS and strives to assure that everyone with HIV disease will live a long and healthy life.” Our Mission “The AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin is at the forefront of HIV prevention, care and treatment and is dedicated to providing quality medical, dental, mental health and social services for all people with HIV disease.” Relevant Local Information Prostitution-Related Arrests City of Eau Claire, Offense: Prostitution, 12 total arrests Offense: Solicitation, 10 total arrests City of Chippewa Falls, Offense: Prostitution, 2 total arrests Offense: Solicitation, 1 total arrests Offense: Facilitation, 3 total arrests Arrest rates for prostitution in the Chippewa Valley are low. However, based on the underground nature of illegal activity, we can assume these numbers are not representative of the actual prevalence of prostitution. Social Networking Data We collected data by accessing public information posted on Backpage ( specifically focusing on the escort section. We chose to focus on Backpage because it one of the most frequently used sites for underage sex trafficking in the United States. Over a two month period, we collected data from 144 ads in total. Eight posts specifically mentioned traveling and suggested that the individuals involved may have been trafficked to the area. From this information, and connections to other posts via link or phone number, it is possible that as many as thirteen women were trafficked into the area during this two-month period.
