Note the corresponding unique corner(s)/edge(s) in the ZIF socket Align the CPU pattern to the socket and place the CPU gently into the socket – do NOT force!!! Seat the CPU – push it down until flush with the socket

Install the CPU (continued) Hold the CPU in place with one hand and engage the ZIF socket handle with the other – the handle will “snap” into place Install the HFA per the instruction sheet – make sure the thermal interface material is properly applied/installed and that all points of HFA engagement are secure Connect the CPU fan cable to the appropriate power socket on the motherboard – watch the orientation.

Install the System RAM “Open” the end clips on the RAM module socket(s) Note the RAM socket cross brace location(s) Note the corresponding slots in the RAM module(s) Align each RAM module to match the RAM socket and insert the module Using even force along the top edge of the RAM module, push the module fully into place – the end clips will “snap” into place (ensure they are engaged) If applicable, install CRIMMs (RDRAM Continuity RIMMs).

Bench Test (continued) Connect the power supply to a grounded power outlet via a good surge suppressor; turn on the surge suppressor and, as applicable, the power supply Bridge the two “power-on/power-switch” pins in the front panel header – the system “should” start up As applicable, hit the “Del” or “F2” key to enter the BIOS If you are able to enter the BIOS your bench test was successful – motherboard, CPU and RAM are functional.

Note that there may not be an exact match between available connectors (headers) on the motherboard and the wire set included in the chassis. At minimum you need to connect the power (on/off) switch. If included, also connect the reset switch, power-on LED, and hard drive LED – others as you desire.

Intel announced 533MHz FSB versions of the Xeon processor (for workstations and entry level servers) – 2.0, 2.4, 2.6, and 2.8GHz.

Twice the transistors of GeForce4,.13 micron technology, supports 1GHz DDR II memory, AGP-8X, DirectX 9.X, “128-bit studio quality floating point”, and 128-bit color. Cards to be released starting in mid-to-late January, shipping in February. Range of line undisclosed. SiS announced the Xabre600 processor –.13 micron, AGP-8X, 300MHz core, 300MHz memory, does not support DX9. Cards coming.

December 12, GSBUG Hardware Info SIG Hardware News (continued) Hard Drives IBM announced that it will begin shipping SATA versions of its recently released Deskstar 180GXP series in On November 15 th, IBM also changed its IDE hard drive warranty to match that of Western Digital, i.e., 3 years for drives with 8MB cache and 1 year for all others. Seagate announced Barracuda and Barracuda Plus drives – 80GBs/platter, max 160GB, 2MB or 8MB cache, PATA and SATA versions. No spec available.

Hard Drive Controllers Promise announced its Serial ATA/150 controller family – the SATA150 TX2plus (2 SATA and 1 ATA/133 channels) and the SATA150 TX4 (4 SATA channels). Neither provides RAID capability.
