Podiatric Medical Licensing Boards  Functions #1 Function is to protect the public by monitoring care and qualifications. These boards serve as the link between the consumer and the licensed podiatrist. They promote public health, welfare and safety.

 Functions Process applications and complete background checks Handle complaints and impose discipline when appropriate Determine scope of practice issues Work with the legislature and AAG on interpreting rules of law related to the practice of podiatry Work with state associations to assure appropriate practice of podiatry

Board Appointment  Governor appointed position Requires senate confirmation Term varies by state typically 3-5 In Iowa comprised of 5 licensed podiatrists and 2 non-podiatrists that represent the general public. Varies slightly among states

Unique Iowa Opportunity  Senate File 364- Incorporates pedorthists and orthotists into the Podiatry Board, thus allowing increased governance. Allows us to control unlicensed firms that attempt to treat patients with foot problems  This passed based largely on support from Iowa Board and IPMS

Iowa Podiatric Medical Society  Elected position for 1-3 years  Continuing Education for members  Liaison between members and APMA  Make recommendations and consensus statements to the Podiatry Board and others  Help members with any practice issues that may arise  Multiple committees Membership, Legislative, Insurance Board of Trustees

State Podiatry Meetings  “Heartland”  Great place to jump start involvement  Planning, speaking  Help to ensure that we as a profession are pursuing evidence based medicine and improved patient outcomes

Why become involved now?  Great source of knowledge for practice management, billing/coding, insurance, legislative issues  Personal and Professional satisfaction  Stepping stone to further involvement within medical community and at the national level  Excellent way to network  Patients appreciate those that are involved- practice builder  WHY NOT NOW?  IF NOT YOU, THEN WHO?

How?  Seek out a seasoned member/mentor  Contact the state executive  Offer to serve on committees  Get involved locally- speaking to community, local hospital
