VIRGIL AND OVID By: Alexandria LaPietra and Eduardo Rivera

Virgil  Born: October 15, 70 B.C.E. Andes, Italy Died: September 21, 19 B.C.E. Brundisium, Italy  He was born into a poor family and until the marriage of his sister he was unable to go to school.  went on to Rome to study rhetoric (the study of writing), medicine, and mathematics before giving himself to philosophy.  His education prepared him for the profession of law (the alternative was a military career), but he spoke only once in court because he was shy and no match against the other well spoken lawyers.

Ovid  Born: 43 B.C.E. Sulmo, Italy Died: c. 18 C.E. Tomis (now Constanta, Romania)  He was born into a wealthy family and studied law for many years and worked in some legal but he disliked the work and lacked political ambitions.  After leaving the legal field he became a well known poet of his time.  He was exiled in 8 or 9 C.E. to Tomi because of a poem that he wrote that made fun of conventional love poetry.
