Ministry of Public Health & Sanitation Clean Water Project Briefing For H.E. Mwai Kibaki President Republic of Kenya

Why is this important? 25% of children under the age of five die from water- borne diseases. 80% of all illness and 50% of all hospitalisations in Kenya are water related. Rural Kenyans spend too much time transporting water from sources that are not clean and safe.

Why is this important? The benefits of this project directly address seven of the 2015 UN Millennium Development Goals. This project supports the “Nairobi Strategy” by implementing a preventive and holistic approach to water supply, while also addressing climate change.

“A nation free of preventable disease” Project Vision Providing clean water to 2,500 rural health clinics and the surrounding communities. Helping an estimated 1.2 million Kenyans have access to safe, pure, water. Eliminating preventable water borne disease “A nation free of preventable disease”

Project Overview (1 of 2) At the request of the Ministry of Public Health, DACC was asked to identify and provide a sustainable water supply solution for Kenya. DACC developed a solution using solar powered pumps. Project has two phases: Phase one: Install demo unit at site selected by MoH. Demonstration well completed at DACC expense. Phase two: DACC to work with MoH to install 2,500 units at selected health clinics throughout Kenya.

Project Overview (2 of 2) Each water pump will provide roughly 21,000 liters of purified water daily for the clinic and surrounding communities. State-of-the-art tanks provide clean water storage for 66,000 liters of water. Units are built to operate and last for 20 years, with little or no maintenance. Wells are dug only in long-term sustainable aquifers.

Product Overview (1 of 2) The unique solar-pump solution was developed by DACC in partnership with leading companies in the industry. The pump is designed to provide a total solution that can successfully operate in harsh environments with little or no maintenance. Each water supply unit consists of four components: Solar powered water pump Solar panels to power pump Integrated water purification system Fully lined storage tank designed for long term use

System installed at Ngenda Health Clinic Sept. 7, 2011 Product Overview (2 of 2) Solar Panels Water Pump Purification System System installed at Ngenda Health Clinic Sept. 7, 2011 Storage Tank

The DACC Solar Water Pump Provides DACC Solar Water Pump System provides a continuous flow of UV treated clean water DACC well water will receive a pre-treatment to remove any harmful e-coli forms DACC UV light water treatment intensity is 4 times the worldwide standard set by the National Sanitation Foundation (NFS) DACC “dual system” UV light provides effective treatment for all chloroforms to 99.999% DACC water filtration process passes through a particulate filter before entering the storage tank

Solar Water Pump Performance Points Eliminates current water interruption caused by unreliable electricity supply Includes 66,000 liters of water storage for drinking and irrigation 325 days of sunlight allows for up to 14 hours per day of solar pumping Pumps an average of 21,000 liters of water per day Water pump is proven to be a reliable water pump. It is installed in over 20,000 locations worldwide. Provides water for drinking and agriculture, and will be a consistent source of crop water for remote villages

Project Benefits (1 of 3) Each water system will save the Kenyan government approximately $500,000 USD over 20 years, or 1 Trillion USD dollars at today's fuel prices, as compared to installation of a diesel pump.

Project Benefits (2 of 3) Each installed system will: eliminate the need for 697 barrels of oil per year (as compared to electric or fuel based pump) Avoid 9.07 metric tons global carbon emissions. Provide convenient, clean water to a rural health clinic and average of 500 people for 20 years.

Project Benefits (3 of 3) Studies indicate that the 2500 wells will have no measurable depletion impact on Kenya’s self-sustaining aquifers ( the 2,500 water pumps, over 20 years, will have a .00025% impact on these aquifers) This project will create an estimated 7,000 local jobs for Kenyans 14

Project Addresses Seven UN Millennium Project Goals 2) Target 7.A:
Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources 15

UN Millennium Project Goals, cont’d 6) Target 2.A:
Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling 16

Nairobi Strategy This project directly supports efforts to address the serious issues of drought, water management, and climate change in Kenya and the Horn of Africa. This project creates “Climate Proofed” infrastructure that addresses water and irrigation issues. The scope and benefits of this project can be easily and quickly expanded.

What is the financial benefit to Kenya? Each water system saves Kenya approximately $500,000 USD over 20 years, or 1 Trillion USD dollars, as compared to installation of a diesel pump. DACC is working with the Ministry of Finance to help them market the carbon credits from this project. It is estimated that the revenue from the carbon credits from this project will begin to generate revenue for the treasury at year 15 – 20.

What are the other indirect benefits of this project? By implementing this project, the Ministry of Public Health can avoid over 18,000 metric tons of carbon from entering the environment each year. Water access will greatly improve the effectiveness of rural health clinics. Further, convenient access to clean water will save significant time for children and families, providing new opportunities for school, gardening, and raising livestock.

Finances Each system costs $125,000 USD which includes: All drilling and borehole preparation to depths where there is a sustainable, long term aquifer. Stand-alone system that is guaranteed to operate for 20 years. Produce water that is purified to 99.999% pure. Installation to be at sites selected by Ministry of Health and based upon need. Significant costs savings for Kenyan Government over current diesel powered pumps.
