The Holy Spirit

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law” (Deut. 29:29).

“For we are the temple of the living God…” (2 Corinthians 6:16).

“You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death.” (Exodus 19:12) Courtesy of Leon Mauldin

“Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, because you are an obstinate people, and I might destroy you on the way.” (Exodus 33:3)

“If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. “For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?” (Exodus 33:15–16)

“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.” (Exodus 40:34–35)

“It happened that when the priests came from the holy place, the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.” (1 Kings 8:10–11)

“Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. When the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel hovered over them.” (Ezekiel 10:18–19)

“This temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar; it was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.” (Ezra 6:15)

“Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory “Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem to you like nothing in comparison?” (Haggai 2:3)

“‘The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the Lord of hosts.”” (Haggai 2:9)

“‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring And My blessing on your descendants; And they will spring up among the grass Like poplars by streams of water.’” (Isaiah 44:3–4)

“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.” (Ezekiel 36:27)

“Jesus answered, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.’” (John 3:5)

“Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 2:38)

“For we are the temple of the living God…” (2 Corinthians 6:16).

Israel Received God’s Presence By Following His Revealed Will God’s Presence & The Word In Israel

“Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them “Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them. According to all that I am going to show you, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct it.” (Exodus 25:8–9)

God’s Presence & The Word In Israel God’s Presence Remained With Israel When They Followed His Revealed Will God’s Presence & The Word In Israel

“You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony which I will give to you. There I will meet with you; and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the sons of Israel.” (Exodus 25:21–22)

God Revealed His Will To Select Prophets, Not To Every Israelite God’s Presence & The Word In Israel

“But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” (2 Peter 1:20–21)

When Israel Departed From God’s Revealed Will, He Departed From Them! God’s Presence & The Word In Israel

God’s Presence & The Word In Christ Every Christian receives the gift of the Spirit, but God’s will was revealed through His Son, apostles & prophets. God’s Presence & The Word In Christ

“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.” (Hebrews 1:1–2)

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16–17)

“And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.” (Mark 16:20)

God’s Presence & The Word In Christ Every Christian receives the gift of the Spirit, but God’s will was revealed through His Son, apostles & prophets. God’s revealed will must be followed for us to receive the Spirit God’s Presence & The Word In Christ

“This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?” (Galatians 3:2)

“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,” (Ephesians 1:13)

God’s Presence & The Word In Christ God’s revealed will must be followed for the Spirit to remain with us. When we depart from God’s revealed will, God departs from us! God’s Presence & The Word In Christ

“Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.” (2 John 9)

Implications Teachers should be judged on Biblical criteria Calvinism has it backwards The fruit of God’s Spirit is not miracles Intuition has its place, but it isn’t revelation The connection between the Spirit & emotions Implications

“In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.” (Ephesians 1:13–14) My understanding of the Spirit is growing. But remember Deut. 29:29 Lesson 1: God’s presence must exist in a holy sanctuary. Promise that God’s Spirit would be poured out (Isa 44:3-4; 1Cor 6:11,19; Acts 2:38) Lesson 2: The connection between Spirit & Word. 2John 9 Revelation is now complete (John 16:13; 1Cor. 13:9-10) But Spirit’s work is not over.

You Are A Spirit Spirit is synonymous with heart. Psalm 51:17 Spirit is synonymous with mind, Philippians 1:27 Spirit is the “inner man,” Ephesians 3:16 You Are A Spirit

“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.” (Matthew 15:18–19) You Are A Spirit

We were created as spiritual beings, Genesis 1:27; 2:7 We corrupt that nature through sin, Ephesians 2:1-3 We needed a new spirit! Adam’s sin corrupted his nature, but he did not corrupt everyone else’s nature (see Ezekiel 18:20) We corrupt our own nature! Our sins make us children of wrath You Are A Spirit

“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances,” (Ezekiel 36:25–27)

We desperately needed a new spirit, Ephesians 2:1-3 Law was not the solution, Romans 7 The solution was not a new law, but a new spirit, Romans 8 What God created as holy, we make unholy. What God made as living and pure, we defile and bring down to death. Adding to the horror is the fact that while we have the power to defile our nature through sin, we are powerless to return to a holy nature on our own. For that, we require God’s grace and aid. So, how would God create a new spirit within us? Law is holy and good (Romans 7:12) Paul and coveting (Romans 7:7-11) Note that Paul was not born in sin! Note vs. 24-25! Note Romans 8:3, 9. Receiving A New Spirit

Significant Synonyms The Spirit (vs. 9) The Spirit of God (vs. 9) The Spirit of Christ (vs. 9) Christ is in you (vs. 10) Does Christ literally live in you? I don’t know many people who think that, but Paul’s use of these terms show that the Spirit can be used synonymously with God and Christ. Perhaps we get caught up with the idea of the Spirit dwelling in our body, when in reality the Spirit is said to dwell in our spirit (2Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 3:17). However, the point here is that to have the Spirit within us is to have the Father and Son as well. Significant Synonyms

Significant Synonyms Walk according to the Spirit (vs. 4) The mind set on the Spirit (vs. 5) In the Spirit (vs. 9) To be “in the Spirit” is not to have the Spirit invade you and take over. It is to be guided by the Spirit, to make the Spirit’s ways our ways. Our walk (manner of life) is now one that follows the Spirit, rather than the course of this world (see again Ephesians 2:1-3). This does not happen without my concurrence, but by setting my mind on the Spirit rather than the flesh. Significant Synonyms

Significant Synonyms The Spirit of God dwells in you (vss. 9, 11) Have the Spirit of Christ (vs. 9) Christ in you (vs. 10) Led by the Spirit of God (vs. 14) What does it mean to have God’s Spirit dwell in me? It’s the same as having His Spirit lead me! To put it simply, it’s not God’s Spirit dwelling alongside my spirit, it’s my spirit being conformed to God’s Spirit! Significant Synonyms

“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances,” (Ezekiel 36:25–27) Note that this idea is found throughout the New Testament: 2Peter 1:4; Ephesians 4:22-24; 2Cor 3:17-18 What would be the purpose of God’s Spirit merely dwelling alongside my spirit? He wouldn’t be revealing new things to me, for as we studied in our last lesson, revelation came through the Spirit to the apostles and prophets of the first century. He wouldn’t be overpowering my will, for to have God’s Spirit in me requires setting my mind on the Spirit (Romans 8:6). No, the purpose is for my spirit to become new, to become like or in the image of God’s Spirit!

“But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.” (1 Corinthians 6:17) Example of Jim and Edith Capps

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5) Note also Romans 8:16, 26-27.

“the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life,” (John 6:63) We are saved by both Spirit and Word (Titus 3:5; James 1:21) We are born of both (John 3:5; 1Peter 1:22-23) We are sealed by both (Eph. 1:13; 2Tim 2:19)

“For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,” (Romans 8:6)

If I’ve Become One Spirit With The Lord… Then I am truly His temple, 1Cor. 6:19 Then I am truly His child, Romans 8:14-17 Then I am fruitful, Gal. 5:22-23 Then I am sealed, Eph. 1:13 Then I have a pledge, Eph. 1:14 If I’ve Become One Spirit With The Lord… Make point regarding our intuition, conscience and feelings! No, the Spirit doesn’t lead us through these (there’s no support in the Bible for such a notion), it’s much better than that! Since our very nature, our spirit, has become one with God we begin to think how He thinks about things, feel about people the way He feels about them. Yes, we can still stumble at times (consider Peter’s stumble in Galatians 2), but since we have set our mind on the Spirit, it’s little wonder we begin to feel and act differently than we once did.

“Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38) I don’t claim to know all there is to know about the Spirit. See John 3:8.
