Adverbs Words that describe adjectives and verbs *Glen felt really proud. *Sue jumps skillfully from her skateboard. Where are the adverbs?

Tips Adverbs usually end in –ly Adjectives often answer the question, “How many?”

Comparative Compares one thing to the other. Example: He is bigger than Tom. She is smaller than Nan. She ran more rapidly than Sue. He was more prepared than Jake.

Tips Most adjectives with one syllable use – er endings to form the comparative. Fast becomes faster. The superhero is faster than a speeding car.

Tips Most adjectives with two or more syllables use more placed before the adjective to form the comparative. Determined becomes more determined. Brody was more determined to win the game than Jermone.

Tips For most adjectives with two syllables ending in –y, drop the –y from the ending and add –ier to form the comparative. Lucky becomes luckier. A clover is luckier than a rabbit's foot:

Superlative Out of all. Example: Of all the boys he is the biggest. Out of the class she is the smallest. She ran most rapidly. He was most prepared.
