RIMAP - ESPON Mapping Tool Sergio Muñoz – ESPON Internal Seminar 2012 Territorial Development Opportunities in Europe and its Neighbourhood Fostering Global Competitiveness

RIMAP – ESPON Mapping Tool - Objective 2 The Online Mapping Tool should provide a tool to visualize and analyze data, available in the ESPON Database, in maps and diagrams. This tool should fill the gap between disseminating data in tables (by the ESPON Database) and disseminating data in fixed maps (by the ESPON Online MapFinder and ESPON projects). The ESPON Online Mapping Tool should be a highly interactive mapping tool available via the Internet where users could select, combine and overlay indicators from the ESPON database, choose the geography and even include animations based on indicator time series

RIMAP – ESPON Mapping Tool - Requirements 3 User and Data requirements have being defined from: Evaluation of existing systems: OECD Explorer, Gapminder, Indiemapper, etc. Scenarios and Use Cases definition.

RIMAP – ESPON Mapping Tool – Existing Webs Evaluation 4 Strengths The tabs are easy to understand, providing more options or changing them. The charts help to understand and reinforce the information, which it’s been displayed on the maps. Resizing the charts and the maps to full size helps to the user focusing in the data or the visualization. The timeline is a very intuitive resource for a variable that it is going to be used very often. The use of dropmenu in indicators selection is intuitive and saves space in the interface. Tooltips reinforce the information displaying, are elegant if they have a good design and don’t saturate the information display. Bubble charts are easy to understand and in addition they add another possibilities as basic operations with the indicators. The information displayed in the map and the chart has to be linked.

RIMAP – ESPON Mapping Tool – Existing Webs Evaluation 5 Weakness Too many options in the main screen can cause no expert users don’t use the tool because an information overload. In addition, with low-resolution screens as tablets or netbooks, it can be difficult to use and understand the information displayed. Too many charts and/or maps (three or four) saturate the user when he tries to understand the information, which it is been displayed. The tool has to be used as “it is”, too many options and possibilities are confusing for the user. The tool has to be intuitive with few and useful options. Furthermore, the learning curve has to be as low as possible. The user does not need to know all the EU geography, so the tool has to provide some options for choosing geographic areas in a visual way.

RIMAP – ESPON Mapping Tool – Basic and Expert Mode 6 Basic ModeExpert Mode IndicatorsOnly main indicators will be accessibleAll the indicators will be accessible Data visualizationMap Zoom and Pan Map Zoom in/out and Pan are available Data visualizationMap Settings Map settings will be predefined. Some Map Settings will be able to be configured: Ranges, Colour Scheme, Font type and size, borders thickness and color, Capitals symbol, etc. The end-user will be able to open/save the Map- Settings locally in the settings-file of the tool. Data visualizationMap Contextual Information The user will also be able to retrieve information from the map by hovering over it, to retrieve information about the values in the map. The information that will be displayed is the name and code of the region, the value of the data displayed and some contextual information about the data displayed. Data visualizationGraph - geographical comparison Bar charts, sector diagrams and curves. Including an indication of average value and variation. Data visualizationGraph – indicators comparison Scatter diagram of two indicators to be selected.Scatter diagram of two indicators to be selected including the possibility to add an indicator for the size of the circles in the scatter diagram and including the possibility to add an indicator for the colour of the circles.

RIMAP – ESPON Mapping Tool – Basic and Expert Mode 7 Basic ModeExpert Mode Data visualizationTime evolution When an indicator is available for a time series the user will have the possibility to view the changes over time in the map and the graph with some time controls: play, next, back, stop. Data visualizationStudy AreaPredefined study areas: Global, ESPON, UE-27, UE- 15. Other study areas will be available such as the Danube region, NWEurope, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean regions. User should also be able to define a study area based on a group of countries and/or regions. This will be done by selecting them from the map. Data Analysis Additional methods, to compare two or even more indicator sets using, for example using a scatter diagram, overlays and indicating the correlation coefficient, but also the possibility to show the changes between two years for one selected indicator. OutputPrint User will be able to print the map as viewed to a selected printer via the normally used printer selection window.User will be able to print the map as viewed to a selected printer via the normally used printer selection window. OutputOpen/SaveUser will be able to open the maps saved locally, so that users can continue (re)building their maps in the Online Mapping tool. OutputExportUser will be able to export the map made as a file in various formats such as pdf, jpg, png, xls. User SupportSome Video Tours will be included
