What does a PM&R physician do? Evaluate, diagnose and treat disability Direct a rehabilitation plan for an individual that provides the best possible outcomes, focuses on functional ability and quality of life Commonly treated conditions include: –amputation, spinal cord injury, sports injury, stroke, musculoskeletal pain syndromes such as low back pain, fibromyalgia, traumatic brain injury, cancer, multiple sclerosis and cardiac disorders, cerebral palsy

What does a PM&R physician do? Many practice options –Subspecialties/Fellowships Pediatric Rehabilitation Pain Sports Medicine Brain Injury Spinal Cord Injury Musculoskeletal EMG/neuromuscular disorders Spine Research

What does a PM&R physician do? Inpatient rehabilitation –Consultation and inpatient service Outpatient rehabilitation –Varied possibilities

What criteria are used to select residents or what makes a competitive applicant? –Pass UCMLE Step I-score of at least 200 –Honors designations Especially on a PM&R rotation –Letters of recommendation from PM&R physicians –Personal statement Why PM&R?

To be a more competitive applicant? –Awards-helpful –Research experience-helpful –PM&R Student Interest Group Not currently active at U of MN(?) –Student member of AAPM&R Attend AAPM&R annual meeting-some student scholarship support is available from the organization Residency fair is held

How many years of training are required? –G1 year-can be with the program or a transitional year –G2-4-PM&R –Fellowship lengths vary ACGME accredited –Pediatric Rehabilitation 2 years –Pain 1 year –SCI 1 year –Neuromuscular Medicine 1 year –Sports Medicine 1 year Others vary, usually 1 year
